Make An Insect Repellent With Lemongrass And Catnip

Keep bugs away with repellent made from essential oils.


Insects often ruin a pleasant outing. Mosquitoes in particular can leave itchy and painful welts behind when they bite, and they are also carriers of serious diseases. To combat these and other insect pests, most people reach for insect repellent. Unfortunately, commercial repellents often contain chemicals, the most prevalent being DEET. A study performed by Duke University in 2002 showed that DEET (in addition to other chemicals in insect repellents) can have an adverse effect on brain function. Instead, make your own, safe bug spray with natural essential oils such as lemongrass and catnip.


Instructions


1. Pour 1/2 cup of the soybean oil into a clean, empty spray bottle. You can also use other types of oils, such as vegetable oil.


2. Add at least 10 drops each of catnip and lemongrass oil. These are the two herbs that repel insect pests.


3. Drop three to six drops of a pleasantly scented essential oil into the mixture, such as lavender, eucalyptus or scented geranium oil, if you don't like the strong scent of the lemongrass and catnip combination.








4. Place the lid on the spray bottle and let the mixture sit for an hour or so. Store it out of direct sunlight, and use within six months. Spray it directly on your skin any time you want to repel insects.

How Do They Treat Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer, if detected early, is curable.


Early detection of cervical cancer can greatly improve the rate of survival and reduce the risk of infertility. The five-year survival rate for very early-stage cervical cancer is almost 100 percent. On the other hand, the five-year survival rate for stage IV cervical cancer is merely 15 to 20 percent.


Noninvasive cervical cancer can be removed by surgery.


If cervical cancer confines to the outside layer, it can be removed by various surgical procedures. Often, no additional treatments are required if the cancer is completely removed. The most common procedures for removing noninvasive cervical cancer are conization (also known as cone biopsy), laser surgery, loop electrosurgical excision procedure, cryosurgery and hysterectomy. Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that removes not only the cancer, but also the cervix and the uterus.








Hysterectomy is used to treat early-stage invasive cancers.


Invasive cervical cancers are defined as cancers that spread beyond the outer layer of the cervix and might metastasize to other organs.


The treatment options for invasive cervical cancer includes hysterectomy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.


Hysterectomy is applicable if the cancer has not invaded beyond 3 mm into the cervix. Radical hysterectomy is recommended for cancers that invade deeper than 3 mm into the cervix. Radical hysterectomy involves removal of the uterus, the cervix, some part of the vagina and affected neighboring lymph nodes. Women undergoing hysterectomy will not be able to have children in the future. Recovery from hysterectomy may take up to two months.








Late-stage cervical cancer requires radiation therapy or chemotherapy.


Radiation therapy for cervical cancer can be delivered by two methods: external beam radiation and brachytherapy. Brachytherapy involves placing radioactive sources close to the cancer. In some cases, both external beam radiation and brachytherapy are used to treat cervical cancer.


Alternatively, patients with advanced cervical cancers can be treated with chemotherapy by injecting drugs that are designed to kill cancer cells.


Both radiation therapy and chemotherapy have serious side effects and might cause infertility.

Use Essential Oils To Relax Muscles

Oh, those tense and aching muscles! You want some relief, but instead of using commercial ointments and creams, you can create your own muscle-relaxing massage oil to help soothe away the aches and pains.Here’s select and prepare essential oils that will help to relax your muscles.


Instructions


1. Choose 100 percent pure essential oils--only these offer healthful benefits. The label will state "100 percent pure." You can find them at health food stores and online. Don’t use synthetic oils. They do not have the same benefits.








2. Buy only sesame oil that is specifically designed to be used for massage. It has been specially refined and prepared for use on the skin. You can get it at health food stores and online.


3. Select the formula that most appeals to your sense of smell. Most stores have tester bottles, so take a few whiffs and choose the scents you really like. For muscle relaxation, there are multiple formulas to choose from. Here are two: Formula #1: ginger, cypress, juniper berries, black pepper; Formula #2: Peru balsam, thyme, sweet bay, marjoram.


4. Make Formula #1. To create the massage oil, first mix the essential oil with the sesame oil, which is known as a "carrier" oil. Measure 2 tablespoons (30ml) of sesame oil into the plastic bottle, then add 10 drops of ginger essential oil, 10 of cypress, 5 of juniper berries and 5 of black pepper. Shake well.


5. Make Formula #2. To create the massage oil, first mix the essential oil with the sesame oil, which is known as a "carrier" oil. Measure 2 tablespoons (30ml) of sesame oil into the plastic bottle, then add 9 drops of Peru balsam essential oil, 8 of thyme, 7 of sweet bay and 6 of marjoram. Shake well.


6. Massage the formula into the tight muscles and surrounding tissues. Don't be surprised if you feel some "heat," as some of these oils provide that muscle-relaxing warmth.

2. Add 20 drops of bergamot essential oil, 10 drops of patchouli essential oil, five drops of cedarwood essential oil and three drops of ginger essential oil to your vodka. These are the fragrances of your perfume oil recipe.


3. Place the lid on your glass container and give it a few shakes to combine the ingredients.


4. Set your glass container aside for one to four weeks so that the fragrances have time to combine and get a little stronger.


5. Rub a few dabs of the homemade perfume oil on your skin after your morning shower.

Breathing techniques prepare you for meditation.


We don't think much about breathing because we do it instinctively; however, to successfully practice meditation and yoga, we must learn correct breathing techniques. In Astadala Yogamala, yoga master B.K.S. Lyengar says that the process of inhalation and exhalation is an art form. You can take breathing classes or watch them on video to develop your skill in this ancient art form.


Preparation


Yoga breathing techniques involve complete focus on your breathing. To do so, you need to set aside time for your session. Breathing practice cannot be perfunctory or rushed. In "Yoga Psychology: A Practical Guide to Meditation," Swami Ajaya says to set aside 15 minutes for breathing and meditation. As you seat yourself for meditation, clear your mind of worries, responsibilities and to-do items. Tell yourself that nothing can disturb you during your session.


Inhaling and Exhaling


Begin by exhaling completely. Inhale deeply through your nose and hold the breath for a count of 16 or until you cannot hold your breath any longer. Then exhale on the same count or for as long as you can. Repeat this process up to seven times. Your breaths should engage your diaphragm, and you should be able to feel them in your stomach muscles. Your inhale and exhale cycles may be short at first, but your breaths will get longer and deeper with practice.


Alternate Nostril Breathing


Press your right nostril closed with your right thumb. Exhale and then inhale through your left nostril for six counts each. Repeat this cycle three times then switch nostrils. You can increase your inhale and exhale counts with practice. Complete three cycles of alternate nostril breathing then return to breathing through both nostrils. Note whether your breath flows evenly through both nostrils; and if it does not, then do more alternate nostril cycles.


Posture








You need to maintain correct posture in order for your ribs to move freely as you breathe; however, if you're a beginner, you may find it hard to sit upright with legs crossed for a 15- to 20-minute session. If you haven't mastered proper seating posture yet, B.K.S Lyengar says you should do your breathing exercises lying prone on your back in the corpse position. Place a rolled-up towel under your lower back to extend your spine as you do your breathing exercises.

What Is Malignant Glioma

A malignant glioma is a type of tumor that originates from glial cells in the brain or spinal cord. Around 80 percent of malignant brain tumors are gliomas, according to the American Cancer Society. Malignant gliomas frequently invade normal brain tissue, making treatment difficult. Some types of gliomas have a better prognosis than others.


Types


A malignant glioma may be categorized as an ependymoma, astrocytoma or oligodendroglioma. Astrocytomas, which start in cells called astrocytes, are the most common type, and they range from slow-growing to fast-growing. Glioblastomas, the name for fast-growing astrocytomas, are the most common type of malignant brain tumor in adults, according to the American Cancer Society. Oligodendrogliomas begin in cells called oligodendrocytes, and ependymomas arise from ependymal cells.


Identification


Malignant gliomas are usually diagnosed using a CT scan, MRI scan and/or biopsy after symptoms appear. Symptoms may include headache, seizures, weakness, numbness, speech problems, personality changes, vision problems, loss of balance, nausea and vomiting. A wide range of symptoms may occur depending on the location of the tumor, according to the American Cancer Society.


Treatment


Surgical removal, radiation and chemotherapy are common treatments for malignant gliomas, according to the American Cancer Society. A combination of treatments is often necessary. Medications may be given to reduce swelling in the brain and control seizures.


Risk Factors


The risk of developing a malignant glioma increases with age, and men are more likely to be affected than women, according to the National Cancer Institute. Previous radiation to the brain puts a person more at risk of developing a malignant glioma. Rarely, family history of malignant glioma may be a risk factor, according to the American Cancer Society. Some genetic disorders can cause malignant gliomas in children. Other risk factors have not been identified.


Outlook








Successful treatment is more likely with ependymomas because they do not usually infiltrate normal tissue. Some astrocytomas, called non-infiltrating astrocytomas, respond well to treatment, according to the American Cancer Society. Other astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas can be difficult or impossible to cure.

Prevent Night Time Leg Cramps (Aka Charlie Horses)

If you've ever woken up in excruciating pain because of leg cramps that cause knots in your leg muscles, you're probably desperate to figure out stop them. First, you must understand what causes them. There are a number of things that can cause night time leg cramps --also known as charlie horses-- to occur. Cramps can be brought on by electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, muscle fatigue, thyroid imbalances, and being over weight.


Instructions


1. Maintain a healthy weight. Because being overweight seems to be one of the triggers that causes charlie horses, maintaining an ideal weight for your height will help eliminate one of the risk factors.


2. Don't push yourself too hard. If you're trying to get into shape, take it slow. Exercising too hard or too long early in your training will lead to muscle fatigue. Try resting every other day, to give your tired muscles a chance to recover.


3. Stretch your calves often. Make this part of your daily routine, preferably performing it right before you go to bed. Sitting down with your legs extended in front of you, reach out to grab your big toes, and pull your feet towards your knees. If you're not flexible enough to do this, wrap a belt or scarf across the soles of your feet, and pull the ends so that you're pulling the toes towards the knees.


4. Stay hydrated. One of the most common causes of night time leg cramps is not drinking enough water. Drink at least 64 ounces of water each day. Break these up into eight servings of eight ounces each, to give your body the opportunity to absorb what it needs. Remember that caffeine is a natural diuretic, which means that it robs your body of stored water. If you drink caffeine on a regular basis, try weaning yourself off of it. At the very least, make up for caffeine intake by drinking more than the suggested daily intake of water.


5. Research your medications. Some medications, such as statin drugs and some steroids (such as predisone) cause imbalances in the body's chemistry. Find out if the medications you're on list leg or muscle cramps as a side effect. If so, talk to your doctor about what (if any) medications they can put you on to counter this effect.


6. Maintain a healthy diet, with foods containing plenty of calcium and potassium. Because leg cramps are often caused by electrolyte levels in the body being out of balance, it's important to have enough calcium and potassium in your system. If you don't like yogurt, dairy products, or bananas, visit your local pharmacy to buy supplements made specifically for leg cramps. These supplements contain the electrolytes needed to alleviate cramping.








7. Have your thyroid checked. If you've tried all of these simple remedies, and your night time leg cramps persist, make an appointment with your doctor. By feeling your thyroid and ordering certain blood tests, your doctor can determine if your thyroid is causing your charlie horses, and can offer advice and/or medication to get your thyroid functioning correctly.

Solve Your Child'S Sleep Problems

Most kids need at least nine to 12 hours of sleep a night (more for younger tots). But, some children can actually suffer from sleeping problems, impacting the amount of rest they get in a given night. It could be due to a number of different factors, including diet, exercise or even environment. To solve your child's sleeping problems, there a few fairly simple things you can do to make bedtime a bit easier.

1. Establish a fairly consistent schedule for sleep. This not only includes the time of night a child will go to bed, but also the time of morning the child will rise. Try to adhere to this schedule for the entirety of the week, with only about an hour variance on the weekends.


2. Add a warm, comforting bath to your child's bedtime routine. Putting in place a bath prior to bed can actually relax your child and make it easier for him to fall asleep.


3. Make bedtime special by including some one-on-one time with your child where you read her a story. This will add to the comfortable nature of this time of night. 4. Set the temperature of your child's room so it is cozy--not too hot and not too cold.








5. Make sure the room is dark. This will ensure that your child isn't distracted by any change in lighting.


6. Make sure the room is quiet. This includes televisions and music being turned off (if these devices are in your child's room) prior to bed.


7. Avoid giving your child any snacks or caffeinated beverages prior to bed. Two good rules of thumb are three hours between the last meal of the night and bedtime, and six hours between a caffeinated drink and bedtime.


8. Keep nighttime activities fairly low-key. Any activities you and your child take part in prior to bed, especially with a child experiencing sleep problems, should be relaxing. You don't want your child to get wound up prior to bed.


9. Consult with a pediatrician if you're still experiencing problems with your child's sleep.

Symptoms


The first indication of Lyme disease infection is a rash, usually in the area where the person has been bitten by the tick. The rash has a target-like look, with a red ring around a clear area of skin, with a dot in the center. The center dot is usually the scene of the bite. Symptoms also include fever, chills and headaches. If left untreated, Lyme disease can cause swollen joints, usually in the knees. In severe cases, meningitis, or swelling of the brain, can occur.


Treatment


Lyme disease in its early stage is often treated with antibiotics such as doxycycline, amoxicillin or cefuroxime. For treatment of Lyme disease is in mid-stages, doctors may recommend intravenous, or IV, therapy. In some cases, reports of diarrhea and gallstones have occurred in patients being treated for Lyme disease with IV therapy. There is an alternative medication, bismacine, that some holistic practitioners have used for treatment. Prevention

Do Pull Motion While Breathing In Freestyle Swimming

Coordinating breathing and the forward pull is the most important skill in freestyle swimming. Done correctly, this technique improves speed and endurance, as you take a full, deep breath every third stroke. Concentration and coordination are required in the beginning, but with practice, the technique becomes second nature.


Instructions


1. Enter the shallow end of the swimming pool and face a wall. Hold on the wall with both hands and use a flotation aid to hold your legs up so that your body is flat in the water. Select an area without too much activity, so that you can focus.


2. Rotate your arms in the freestyle swimming stroke at moderate pace, keeping your head out the water and facing forward. With a flotation device, you can keep your legs still. Without one, kick your legs just enough to keep your body afloat.


3. Count three strokes and take a breath. Put your face in the water and blow out the air while moving your arms in the freestyle stroke while counting the stokes. At the third stroke, rotate your head so that your ear is flush with your upper arm.


4. Take a breath and return your face into the water, while still counting your strokes. At the third stroke, rotate your head so that your ear is flush with your upper arm. You should now be facing the opposite direction of the first breath.








5. Focus on your breathing pace and make sure you take a deep enough breath.








There should be no pause in forward motion when you turn your head while breathing.


6. Repeat these steps for 10 minutes and then let go of the wall and swim a length of front crawl, using the breathing on the pull stroke technique. Keep a steady pace and don't rush the intake breath. Make sure to take a full breath and blow it all out underwater.

However, today the custom has been adapted by other groups of the region, plus bundles of dried sage are sold around the country for the purpose of smudging or as incense. When thoroughly dried, a wrapped bundle of sage burns quickly, releasing a pleasant odor that can freshen up a room. Smudging is not much different, except the bearer of the sage stick and the other people in the room may believe that there is some collective cleansing power released when the sage burns.


Instructions


The Burning


1. Make or buy a sage stick. Making sage sticks is a small cottage industry in New Mexico, so buying a sage stick is easy to do and not expensive. If you decide to make your own stick, the plant is abundant throughout the Western plateau and Front Range of the West. Simply cut a dozen leafy twigs about eight inches in length and wrap the bundle loosely together with twine. Then let the material dry for a few weeks and it should be ready to burn.








2. Place a non-conductive saucer or small bowl on a table in the center of the room, where you want to release the smoke from the burning sage. Have a second bowl nearby of the same size. This will be used to cover the burning plant material and halt the combustion process. In either case, a metal plate should never be used because it will become very hot from contact with the smoldering sage.


3. Stand next to the table and hold the sage in your hand.


4. Light the tip of the stick with a large kitchen match or a candle and place the spent match in one of the plates. Now, while the stick is still burning, slowly move the sage bundle at shoulder height and then set in down in the saucer.


5. Grab the saucer and walk around the perimeter of the room, while holding the burning sage at chest level. Do this until the odor of the burning sage fills the room. If other people are in the room, you can move the sage around the place where they are standing or sitting. Do this as a friendly, welcoming gesture, and be careful not to let any sparks from the sage fall on anyone in the room.


6. Once the desired level of smoke has entered the atmosphere of the room, return to the table and place the saucer with the smoldering sage on the top of the table.








7. Take the second saucer and cover the bundle of evergreen leaf until all combustion has ceased.

Soluble fiber can treat both, while insoluble fiber treats only the latter. With this form of treatment, a person with IBS will either take a fiber supplement or introduce high-fiber foods into his diet to improve and lessen his symptoms. A good source of soluble fiber is fruits or legumes, and a good source of insoluble fiber is grains and vegetables. While this may seem to contradict the first form of treatment, it's really about getting a person to be "regular" with his bowel movements.


Medications


Depending on the severity of IBS, a person may need to start taking a medication to help relieve symptoms of the condition. With alosetron, the large intestines become relaxed, lessening the frequency of contractions and thereby treating diarrhea. With lubiprostone, the small intestines see an increase in moisture, making it easier to pass stool and thereby treating constipation. Once the diarrhea or constipation is treated, other symptoms like cramping and flatulence should decrease.


Hydration


With most people, increasing the amount of water they drink each day can help treat IBS. When a person isn't properly hydrated, the body can get out of balance, including the movement of the bowels. For people with IBS, this intake of water becomes even more important, since their bodies are far more susceptible to imbalance, namely within the large intestines. By drinking at least 64 ounces of water each day, a person with IBS can help keep the frequency and consistency of bowel movements normal.


Exercise








Hearing that exercise is a treatment for IBS can make some people scoff. But the thing about exercise, especially that which is done on a daily basis, is it can bring about an equilibrium in the rhythmic movements of the large intestines. When they are put in balance, they should no longer contract more than relax and they should prompt a regularity of the bowels.

When you're traveling in an unfamiliar place or just walking in your own community, it's unnerving to think that someone may be following you. It's vital to keep your wits about you. Mentally construct a logical plan right on the spot and stay safe. By thinking ahead and reviewing the following steps, you'll be prepared should you ever suspect someone is following you.


Instructions


In a Car


1. Make sure that someone is indeed tailing your car. Make 3 or 4 quick turns to see if the car in question follows. Signal to turn one way but at the last second, quickly turn the opposite direction.


2. Note as many details as possible of the car that is following you: the make, model, color, any damage to the car, license plate and number of people in the car.


3. Get on a well-traveled highway or go immediately to a highly populated area. Attempt to lose the tail amid a lot of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, increased activity, stop lights and well-lit areas. Drive to a police station and get help in the event the pursuer persists.


4. Watch for a non-pursuing car that tries to pass. Speed up a little so that the vehicle is unable to overtake and must pull in behind. Prevent other vehicles from passing.


5. Allow other cars to obscure the visual path of the car that is following you. Take the opportunity to make several quick turns in an effort to lose the tail.








6. Slow down on the approach to a busy intersection with a stop light. Wait for the light to go red and quickly accelerate through the intersection at the last second. Hope that the vehicle following gets caught at the light.


7. Make certain the pursuer is nowhere in sight. Pull into a busy parking lot or shopping area where there are a lot of people and cars. Honk your own continuously to draw attention to yourself.


On Foot


8. Make sure that someone is actually following you on foot. Keep an eye on the individual then make several random changes in direction. Retrace your steps and make a U-turn.


9. Keep track of the path so as not to get lost. Make note of identifying details of the pursuer: height, weight, gender, hair color, facial hair and clothing.


10. Track the individual who is following but don't look back or turn around. Use a small cosmetic mirror or keep an eye on the reflection in shop windows.


11. Get on a crowded bus or subway, then quickly exit a rear door as the pursuer boards. Consider buying a ticket to a movie, then leave the theater through an emergency exit before the tail enters.








12. Enter a shop, cafe or restaurant and mingle. Ask a clerk or service person to call the police.

Instructions


1. Mix two drops of your favorite essential oil fragrance with a tablespoon of carrier oil. Mixing the two will prevent any irritation to the skin, and it will help you massage the oil in. Lavender is a common aromatherapy oil to use with massage for relaxation.








2. Relax your body before massage. Dip your fingers into the essential oil blend. Begin by practicing effleurage, which is a light touch used to warm up the muscles. Firm the hands, but keep them relaxed as you apply soothing strokes to the legs, arms, feet and hands. Use the entire hand to apply pressure to the muscles. Use firm or light strokes that feel comfortable to the body.


3. Practice petrissage, which means using the thumbs to knead knots or areas of tension on the body. For example, apply a slight pressure with your thumbs on the calf muscles, kneading the muscle with a circular motion. This will increase circulation, release toxins and relax muscles.








4. Massage away tension in the face and scalp. Dip the fingers in the essential oil blend, and massage the scalp as though you were shampooing. Use the pads of your fingers to apply gentle pressure to the scalp as you massage the oil in. Work from the forehead down to the base of the neck.


5. Use both effleurage and petrissage to massage the shoulders, arms and legs with essential oil. Enlist a partner to massage the back. When massaging the legs, use effleurage to stroke the leg upwards, or concentrate on fatty or muscled areas with the petrissage method.


6. Massage the stomach using light effleurage strokes. Lay flat on your back, dip your fingers into the essential oil pot and massage the stomach in a circular clockwise motion.


7. Finish with a foot massage. Use the petrissage method to knead the arch. Then massage the top of the foot with your fingers and between the toes with your thumb.
