Relaxation Techniques For Sleeping

Cultivating good sleep habits help you stay active and alert during the day.

Your quality of sleep often affects how you feel and perform throughout the day. Your sleeping routine, bedtime schedule, stress level and day-to-day habits all have an impact on your quality of rest. Incorporating relaxation techniques for sleeping into your sleep habits and nighttime schedule will help boost energy levels during the day and help you sleep better at night. Start the technique you'd like to try about 15 minutes before you'd like to go to bed. Eliminate distractions like cell phones and television.

Progressive Body Relaxation

This relaxation technique is one of the most useful techniques because it concentrates on each part of the body individually. The goal with this process is to relax each major part of the body in progressive order. Lie on your back, preferably on your bed, and close your eyes. Starting with the feet, tighten the muscles and release. Concentrate on breathing deep, even breaths. Move in progressive order up your body to your ankles, shins, knees, thighs, buttocks, lower back, torso, hands, arms, shoulders, neck and head. When you've reached the end of your progression, feel your body for any tense spots that you might have missed and repeat the process until your entire body is relaxed.

Deep Breathing Relaxation Technique

Deep breathing techniques are used to literally breathe relaxation into your body, and is especially used in yoga for this purpose. Lie on your back, on your bed, and close your eyes. Check your body for any particular tense spots. Inhale slowly through your nose and release the breath through the mouth. Imagine your lungs filling with air from the bottom of the lungs to the top. When your lungs feel full, hold your breath for a few moments. Release your breath slowly. Send your breath to any tense spots in the body. Many people like to count to 10 as they hold and release to help regulate the process. Repeat the technique as much as necessary to relax you enough to fall asleep.

Guided Imagery Technique

Guided imagery as a relaxation technique is often considered the most fun because it uses your own imagination. The goal of this particular technique is to jump-start the dreaming process while imagining yourself in calm surroundings. Some people like to choose a place that has meaning to them, or where they feel safe and happy. Any setting where you feel at peace is acceptable for this exercise. Guide yourself through your five senses in the peaceful scene you have chosen. What does your scene feel like, smell like, look like, sound like, taste like? Concentrating on these details helps the mind relax enough to fall asleep.

Musical Relaxation and Sound Technique

Many people like to use soft and relaxing music to help fall asleep. This technique might require a little preparation, like making sure you have your music player and music cued to where you want it. If music is too distracting, some people use ambient sounds like sounds of a tropical jungle, whales singing, rain falling or the sounds of the ocean. This particular technique is used like the guided imagery technique to induce the dreaming process, and these techniques are sometimes combined. You might need to experiment a few times to see what works for you.

The Benefits And Uses Of Emu Oil

The Australian emu bird is also a good source of red meat.

Emu oil is derived from the fat of the emu bird, which is typically found in Australia. People mainly use emu oil to nourish and hydrate their skin and hair, but the oil is also safe for human consumption. This particular oil contains essential fatty acids such as oleic acid, omega-3 and omega-6. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that omega-3 fats combat dry skin and fatigue in addition to preventing heart disease.

Skincare

Massage emu oil on your body after a shower.

The Natural News website states that you can use emu oil to maintain healthy skin. The oil moisturizes skin without clogging pores and can be used on your body and face instead of commercial lotions. The lipids and fatty acids in emu oil are anti-inflammatory, making it non-irritating and thus ideal for those with sensitive skin. You can also use it on wounds and cuts to help your skin heal faster, although only refined emu oil works for this purpose because all impurities have been removed.

Haircare

Massage the oil into wet or dry hair.

Emu oil lubricates and nourishes hair from root to tip. Native Australians have used emu oil to treat their hair for thousands of years. The oil hydrates the hair shaft, which helps prevent breakage and dryness. The oil also nourishes the scalp, which helps restore moisture and prevent dandruff. The Natural News website states that emu oil is also beneficial for hair growth. Massage the oil into your hair before bed and place a shower cap on your head. Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner the next morning. Do this deep treatment once per week to maintain healthy locks.

Nutritional Supplement

Emu oil works on the inside of the body as well as the outside, which is why people also use emu oil as a nutritional supplement. This oil is high in three types of healthy fats that are beneficial for heart and brain health. In addition, the oil also contains vitamins A and E, both of which are beneficial for the skin. However, if you plan on consuming the oil, read the label to ensure that it has been purified. Not all types of emu oil are safe for ingestion. Most companies recommend taking 1 tbsp. of emu oil per day.

Alternative Pain Relief For Severe Migraine Headaches

Every year, 28 million Americans suffer from migraines, but not all of them run to the pharmacy to buy over-the-counter pain relievers. To effectively treat your migraines, you need to identify what triggers them and learn treat them when they hit. These alternative treatments will help you predict, prevent and remedy future migraines so you can quickly overcome the pain and enjoy your days.

Keep a Migraine Journal

Keep a journal of every migraine you experience, noting its intensity and duration, as well as any possible triggers. For instance, write down how much sleep you got the night before, the weather, and what you ate before your migraine occurred. After a few migraines, you may notice a pattern in your journals and identify triggers, which you can then eliminate from your diet and lifestyle or use to predict and prepare for future migraines.

Take Daily Supplements

If you are a frequent migraine sufferer, take magnesium supplements along with calcium to reduce the frequency of migraines. Migraine sufferers have magnesium deficiencies which can be at least partially overcome by taking daily supplements.

If magnesium causes diarrhea, take daily riboflavin (vitamin B12) supplements instead to ward off future migraines. Taken in large doses (400 mg per day), riboflavin has been proven to reduce the frequency of migraines by 50 percent. Riboflavin should reduce the number of migraines the first month but will become even more effective in following months. The herb feverfew has also been proven to reduce the frequency of migraines when ingested daily.

Choose Your Migraine Environment

Select a place you can retreat to when you feel an oncoming migraine. Because migraines make you sensitive to light and noise, choose a dark, quiet room. Lie down with a cold compress for your forehead and close your eyes. If possible, take a nap.

Use Aromatherapy

Add a few drops of essential oils to your cold compress or your bath to ease your migraine. Helpful for migraines are lavender, chamomile and marjoram.

Consider Acupuncture

If you are unable to take supplements, consider acupuncture to relieve migraine pain. A study published in the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine revealed that acupuncture proved more effective in reducing migraine pain than traditional medications, with no side effects.

The Dangers Of Power Lines

The driving force behind our economy in America is the power we use to light, heat, cool and supply the comforts of our everyday lives. Conductive pathways must be made to carry the power produced from nuclear power plant, coal, wind and solar energies to our homes and businesses. These conductive pathways often come in grid forms and are carried to individual units by power lines. You should be aware of power line dangers as a consumer to know the risks posed.

Controversy

Concerns about the effects power lines were having on humans began to be raised in the 1960s. Utility workers in the Soviet Union showed headaches and sleeplessness in high numbers. Since that tim, studies have been performed to get a risk-assessment of the power lines and their electric fields. Most of the studies claimed no link while others claimed evidence that there was a link.

Conductors

Practice extreme caution when you use wet materials around power lines. Water is a conductor that can coat a nonconductor, allowing electricity to slide across the surface. Your body is also an electricity conductor. Touching a power line when climbing a tree can yield a shock with enough force to kill you.

Disasters

One of the most commonly known dangers that power lines pose is during natural disasters. Trees near power lines or poles can be knocked down, exposing a live wire. Combined with rain or wet surfaces, these can be fatal to those who are trapped in their cars or who come into contact with toppled wires.

Risks

All power lines produce electromagnetic fields. Exposure to low-frequency magnetic fields of 2 mG or more can cause adverse effects in humans. Children have a higher rate of leukemia when exposed to these magnetic fields. There has also been research that shows that miscarriage percentages are increased with temporary levels of exposure of 16 mG. Other diseases have also been linked to power line EMF dangers.

Considerations

Since scientific research to find definitive answers on the dangers of power lines is too costly in most cases, research is often stunted. Avoiding power lines is also difficult because of the growing need for energy. Teaching your children about safe play around power lines and poles can help to avoid electrocution.

The Colors And Meanings Of Garnet Gemstones

Though commonly found in red or brown, garnets occur in a rainbow of colors.

Garnets are fairly common gemstones used in jewelry. They are found naturally in the United States, Africa and Eastern Europe. Though garnet gemstones have symbolic meaning attached to them, their significance is unrelated to their color. Does this Spark an idea?

Colors of Garnet

The most common color for garnet is a dark red or brown, but garnets naturally exist in a wide variety of colors. They can be pink, green, yellow, orange, colorless, black or purple. The red and brown garnets most often found in jewelry are a composite of the pyrope and almandine species of garnet.

Species and Color

There are seven types of garnet: almandine, andradite, demantoid, grossularite, pyrope, spessartite and uvarovite. However, stones can be a combination of these species, which means the number of garnet types is quite large. Pyrope and spessartite garnets are red; andradites are green or red; demantoid are green; almandine are red, dark purple or brown; grossularite occurs in many light colors, but not red or brown; and uvarovite is brilliant green.

Meaning

The garnet is known as the birthstone of January and is also the gemstone for the second year of marriage. This gem also can symbolize purity, faithfulness, truth, commitment, awareness, insight and regeneration. The symbolic meanings are connected to garnets in general, not to a specific type or color of garnet.

Diet Cure For Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition that causes the body's bones to weaken and thin over time. As your bones become porous, you are more likely to break or fracture a bone due to seemingly innocuous actions such as opening a jar of tomato sauce or hugging a friend. Since osteoporosis develops due in part to a lack of calcium and vitamin D, a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D may help to delay the onset of osteoporosis or prevent it completely.

Diet if You Already Have Osteoporosis

Although diet alone will not cure osteoporosis, it can help halt progression of the disease. If you suffer from osteoporosis, talk to your doctor about a meal plan that ensures you get enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet. Since calcium and vitamin D deficiency in the bones cause them to attenuate over time, adequate mineral levels may help prevent further bone damage. Osteoporosis sufferers should seek therapy in addition to diet changes. Medications such as bisphosphonates and raloxifene seek to retain your current bone mass and, in some cases, even promote additional bone density.

In addition to increases in calcium and vitamin D, your diet should aim to eliminate factors that contribute to and worsen osteoporosis such as alcohol consumption and too much caffeine. A soy-rich diet may also have benefits for osteoporosis. Before you begin any specific diet, talk to your doctor about your current medical history. Since many women and men get osteoporosis even with adequate calcium and vitamin D levels, you may need to take medicine or undergo hormone therapy to maintain bone density.

Osteoporosis Prevention

The best way to cure osteoporosis is to prevent its development in the first place. Often, people wait until it's too late before they begin to increase their calcium and vitamin D levels. To protect yourself from osteoporosis, begin a calcium-rich diet at an early age. Bones require the most calcium in childhood and adolescence. Thus, do not miss out on this vital opportunity to build bone density. Pregnant and nursing women must also remain especially vigilant, as the body requires additional calcium during this time.

Ways to Get Vitamin D and Calcium

Many people associate calcium with dairy. While dairy does have plenty of calcium, you can eat many other products to get sufficient calcium. Delicious and nutritious foods high in calcium include almonds, broccoli, kale and salmon. To ensure that you get enough calcium (defined by the Mayo Clinic as between 1,000 and 1,500 mg a day depending on whether you receive hormone therapy or not), you may want to consider calcium supplements. Calcium supplements exist in many varieties, such as pills and even chocolates. Multivitamins also often contain additional calcium. If you take a multivitamin, note that calcium may inhibit the absorption of iron, so you should take a separate iron supplement at another time of the day if you require extra iron.

Vitamin D also helps ward off osteoporosis. The most immediate way to get vitamin D is through sunlight. However, due to the sun's potentially dangerous UV rays, you should not lie out in the sun all day. Foods naturally high in vitamin D include fish (especially oily fish like salmon and anchovies) and egg yolks. Many multivitamins also contain vitamin D. For an added bonus, look for calcium supplements that also contain vitamin D.

Relief For Kidney Stone Pain

For some people, kidney stones may feel like a dull cramping in the back, not unlike a spasm. For others, it may feel like someone is kicking you repeatedly in the side while you beg for mercy or death in your bed. For some, pain may occur in the lower back, near the spine. For others, it may occur near the hips or bladder. But, if you have had kidney stones before, you'll know what it is as soon as it starts. Luckily, there are a few ways to relieve the pain from kidney stones.

Identification

Kidney-stone pain generally feels like an aching or cramping in the lower mid-section of your body, in the area of your urinary system. The pain radiates throughout that area, fluctuating in intensity until it eventually tapers off and disappears. This will occur at random until the stone is either passed naturally or removed by surgery.

Effects

Pain caused by kidney stones can be completely debilitating, inducing vomiting and blackouts in the worst cases. Blood may be found in the urine and fever may occur, indicating a bladder or kidney infection that cannot be ignored even when the pain subsides. If you are experiencing kidney-stone pain, you must find a doctor as soon as possible. Sometimes a simple change in diet is all that is needed to be free from future kidney stones and infections.

Treatment with Medication

Depending in the level of pain you are experiencing from kidney stones, 400 to 600 mg of over-the-counter pain-relieving medicine (two to three Ibuprofen tablets) can be enough to combat the pain. For some, prescription-strength medication such as Vicodin or Hydrocodone may be needed. The important thing to remember is that the pain generally will subside within an hour or so, depending on how long it takes for the stone to squeeze between certain areas of your urinary tract system. Try over-the-counter medication first, following the directions indicated on the bottle. If this does not work, switch to a pain medication your doctor prescribes for you. If you have not talked with your doctor yet, give your doctor a call and ask for instruction. If the pain is excruciating and has not subsided after two hours, consider going to your local emergency room.

Treatment without Medication

Kidney stones can come on abruptly without warning at any time of the day, and you may not be near your medication. In this case, try lying on your side in fetal position on a comfortable surface. This will not take the pain away, but it can ease it and put your mind in a more relaxed place. If this does not help, try the other side and different positions. Do not panic. Although the pain may be severe, you are not in any immediate danger. The stone is simply passing through a tight area of your system. As soon as it passes, the pain will evaporate.

Further Prevention

Many times stones are brought on by stress, dehydration or diet. Once you visit your doctor and the cause of your stones are determined, the doctor will advise you on the best path of prevention. Sometimes a mere change of mindset or habit is all that is needed to say good-bye to the stones. Stones can and do reoccur, so don't be surprised if you feel the familiar aching later on. But keeping up with your doctor's suggestions will help ward off further problems as long as possible, possibly even forever.

Native American Plants Used As Remedies

American Indians boiled native plants and roots into medicinal teas.

Dozens of native American plants have been used as remedies by various American Indian tribes. Native Americans used flowers, leaves, bark, roots and herbs to soothe and cure their bodily complaints. Among these are plants that were used as medicinal remedies for bronchitis, colds, asthma, fevers and diarrhea. Plants were also used to heal burns, backache and sore muscles.

Remedies for Bronchitis

Bloodroot was used to cure chronic bronchitis. According to Abigail Redmond of Wilkes University, it was known as a pain reliever and also used by American Indians to heal sore throats, rheumatism, asthma, lung ailments, laryngitis, fevers, and warts.

The leaves of the wormwood plant were boiled and made into a tea that was known to reduce the severity of bronchitis symptoms and at times cure it.

A tea made from the leaves of the creosote bush was similarly used for bronchitis. The Natchez Indians made teas from boiled pleurisy roots to expel phlegm and help those suffering from pneumonia.

Remedies for Colds and Asthma

According to the Manataka American Indian Council, rabbit tobacco is a native American plant used to treat coughs, colds, flu and asthma. Cherry bark contains prussic acid and was used to suppress coughs. The yellow, black and cherry birch contain salicylate, as well as pipsissewa and spiraea. These were all helpful in relieving cold symptoms.

The volatile oils from the pine, cedar and balsam fir reduced congestion in the nose and lungs as well as the menthol extracted from mint.

Remedies for Diarrhea

The Cherokee Messenger lists no fewer than seven native American plants that American Indians used to combat diarrhea and how they used them.

The Ottawa and Chippewa tribes boiled the entire geranium plant to make a tea to combat diarrhea. The Menominees used the inner bark of the dogwood, which they boiled, cooled and squirted into the rectum with a makeshift rectal syringe.

Three tribes, the Pawnee, Omaha, and the Dakota, boiled the root bark of black raspberry to calm diarrhea. The Mohegans used fermented, year-old ripe black wild cherry juice for dysentery. A simple tea of blackberry roots was the treatment preferred by northern California Indians.

Remedies for Burns, Backache and Fever

Yellow-spined thistle blossoms were boiled by tribesmen into a syrup and applied to burns and sores on the surface of the skin to achieve a healing effect.

Aches, especially in the back, were treated with horsemint. Fresh leaves were picked, crushed and ground before being soaked in cold water. This produced a drink which, according to the Cherokee Messenger, was thought to relieve back pain, lower fever and reduce body chills.

Boneset boiled into a tea was considered the best remedy for fever and colds. The witch hazel plant was also boiled and its extract rubbed on sore muscles to alleviate pain.

The inner root of the willow tree was often boiled by tribes into a highly concentrated drink and ingested to relieve chills. The bark was prepared in the same way to reduce fevers.

Do Caffeine Pills Help With Weight Loss

Some weight loss supplements contain caffeine. Caffeine peps and wakes you up, but its role in helping you take off pounds is an ongoing question.

Caffeine is a Diuretic

Caffeine takes water out of the system and people may lose additional water weight when taking caffeine pills, according to the Mayo Clinic website.

Suppresses Apetite

Caffeine reduces a person's desire to eat, but the appetite suppressing effects of this substance do not last for a long enough period of time to determine if this effect of caffeine contributes to weight loss.

Binge Eating?

Taking too many caffeine diet pills can lead to more stress, which can lead to binge eating, according to the Teecino website. Following the directions on the package prevents many of these problems, but people with anxiety problems may want to find a caffeine free weight loss supplement.

Calories Burned

Caffeine sometimes causes a person to burn extra calories after consuming a product that contains the substance. The effect is not large enough to be a factor in additional weight loss.

Use Caution

Consuming extra caffeine does cause a person to lose weight through the removal of extra water from the body. As long as a dieter uses caffeine in moderate doses, coffee, tea and diet sodas may help the dieter lose weight because of its diuretic effects. Caffeine should be used with caution as it can cause nervousness, irritability and insomnia.

Recognize Symptoms Of Pulmonary Hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension, also known as Cor Pulmonale, is a condition that is caused by an enlarged heart. This enlarged heart is caused by chronic lung disease or malfunction. In most cases, pulmonary hypertension is a chronic (ongoing) condition, but may also include short term (acute) episodes.

Pulmonary hypertension typically afflicts adults over 50 years of age, though younger people and even teens have been diagnosed with the condition. The condition involves the heart, the lungs and the blood vessels.

Caused by high blood pressure in the lungs, blood flow within the lungs is restricted, which makes the right side of the heart work harder to pump adequate amounts of blood into the lungs. Over time, the heart becomes enlarged and the pressure this causes may ultimately lead to heart failure.

Learning recognize symptoms of pulmonary hypertension my help ensure prompt and adequate treatment of the condition.

Instructions

1. Pay attention to any shortness of breath that is noticed upon exertion that was not present before. This shortness of breath may even occur during physical activity that is not particularly strenuous.

2. Be aware of ongoing feelings of fatigue or weakness that may or may not be accompanied by chest pains.

3. Watch for episodes of near fainting or faintness when moving from a sitting to a standing position, or from lying down to standing. This means that blood pressure levels are off in your body.

4. Be watchful for any signs of swelling in the ankles or feet, which may indicate edema, or fluid buildup. Also watch for any swelling in the stomach or abdominal area.

5. Pay attention to any signs of bulging veins in the neck or any bluish tinge of skin, fingernail beds, or lips. This is a key indication that oxygen levels are low in the blood.

Recognize An Abscessed Tooth

No one wants to experience an abscessed tooth. The pain is often excruciating. Worse yet, sometimes the dentist can’t work on the tooth until a round or two of antibiotics has been absorbed into the body. Unfortunately, many people will get at least one abscessed tooth in their lifetime. The problem is that not many people recognize the early symptoms of an abscess. That means they may not know they have a problem until it is too late.

Instructions

1. Recognize any bitter or metallic tastes within the mouth. This is one of the earliest clues that an abscess might be forming.

2. Recognize bad breath. Although most people don’t want to admit it, they have at least an inkling of suspicion when their breath isn’t what it should be. This condition is an early clue that an abscess could be forming.

3. Fever, whether it is low-grade or high, usually means that there is an infection in the body. If it is experienced in conjunction with any of the other symptoms listed here, chances are good that an abscess has happened.

4. Suspend eating temporarily when the simple act of chewing causes pain. Try to localize from where the pain is coming. If possible, determine exactly which tooth is causing the problem. This will be helpful to the dentist prior to the examination.

5. Steer clear of hot or cold foods once you realize that they seem to irritate the condition. This will make it a bit easier to survive the pain until a dental visit can be made.

6. Call a dentist when any kind of unusual pain in the mouth or jaw can’t be explained away. It matters not if the pain is sharp, shooting, dull or throbbing--any of these symptoms could spell abscess.

7. Report to a dentist as quickly as possible when gums become unusually red or badly swollen. This is a clear indication that an abscess already exists, and immediate antibiotic treatment may be called for.

8. Recognize when the mouth, jaw, throat and/or neck areas are swollen. Such swelling may be difficult to spot in early stages. However, as it progresses and becomes more evident, that indicates infection is rapidly spreading into other tissue. The more serious the infection, the more difficult the abscess may be to treat in a timely manner.

9. Identify any sores that may be or have already formed on the mouth or gums. Report open sores, especially any that may be draining or bleeding, to a dentist immediately. This could indicate a serious situation.

Epsom Salt & Cirrhosis

Bathing in Epsom salts may help relieve some symptoms of cirrhosis

Cirrhosis is a serious and progressive condition of the liver. It is often the result of prolonged abuse of alcohol, but may also result from Hepatitis B or C. Symptoms may go unnoticed at first, but serious complications can develop if left unchecked. Reports suggest that Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) may be useful for alleviating some symptoms in those who suffer from cirrhosis.

Liver Functions

The liver has numerous important functions in the human body. For example, the liver is necessary to process fats and protein from food, passing out of the liver as bile and excreted via the gut. The liver also removes toxins from the body. One of its more familiar functions is to process and remove alcohol, which is why alcoholism and cirrhosis are so closely linked. Alcohol abuse damages the liver, which in turn is progressively less able to process the alcohol intake.

Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis of the liver is a condition where healthy liver tissue is gradually replaced by scar tissue. As scar tissue builds, even more normal liver tissue dies. As a result, liver function is seriously compromised over time. Symptoms of progressed cirrhosis range from weight loss and general weakness to jaundice, internal bleeding and personality changes, the latter caused by unprocessed toxins affecting the brain. There is also an increased risk of liver cancer, and ultimately a liver transplant may be necessary.

Hypomagnesaemia

Hypomagnesaemia is a symptom frequently seen in alcoholic and cirrhotic patients. Hypomagnesaemia is a lack of magnesium in the blood and can lead to numerous secondary symptoms including hypocalcaemia. Hypocalcaemia is a cause of tetany, or involuntary and painful muscular spasms. It can also lead to other, life-threatening complications. Hypomagnesaemia can be caused by a poor diet low in dietary magnesium, but it is also caused by alcoholism and cirrhosis irrespective of magnesium intake.

Magnesium Overdose

Hypomagnesaemia might be helped through treating with magnesium salts, including magnesium sulphate, which is the clinical term for Epsom salts. Epsom salts are so-named because the mineral was originally sourced from spa-water in the English town of Epsom. Epsom salts are 100 percent magnesium sulphate and although the salts can be taken internally, care is advised since overdosing is a real and dangerous possibility. Excess magnesium is removed from the body by the kidneys, so individuals suffering from kidney problems are warned to be especially wary of taking Epsom salts internally. Deaths from accidental Epsom salt overdose have been recorded.

Epsom Salt Baths

Although magnesium sulphate should be taken internally only under medical supervision, Epsom salts can be added to a bath for positive effects. Studies carried out at the University of Birmingham, UK, show that magnesium is very well absorbed through the skin. Bathing in magnesium sulphate baths has been shown to directly increase the levels of magnesium in the blood, and is considered a safe means of increasing blood magnesium levels in cirrhotic patients.

Lose Weight Without Starving Yourself

Watch what you eat.

Eat while you lose weight.

Instructions

1. Make a list of healty foods that you can eat as much as you want. Such as water, just kidding. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains, such as baby carrots, celery, avocados, apples, oranges, blueberries, steel cut oatmeal, rice cakes. Allow yourself to eat as much as you want of the foods on your list. Steel cut oatmeal moves slowly through your digestive system and helps you to feel full longer.

2. Drink plenty of liquids including water and green tea. Green tea helps your body metabolize (burn) fat. I recommend at least 5 cups of green tea per day. NOT SWEETENED!

3. MOVE - Keep yourself moving even if it is not "exercise". Walk as much as you can. Park your car as far away from the store or bank as possible so that you can maximize your exercise. Even if you start out walking only 1 minute per day, you can slowly increase the amount until you are walking 45-60 minutes per day.

4. Have your favorite snacks available, but do not eat them. Remember, if it tastes good, spit it out! Choose not to eat them right now. Keep yourself busy, distraction is the best method to reduce eating.

1. Research local spas and salons before setting an appointment. Ask as many questions as you need to feel more comfortable. Be sure your specialist is experienced with the Brazilian wax and not just a regular bikini wax.

2. Be sure the hair to be removed is approximately ¼ inch long. Shorter hair may not hold well and longer hair may be more painful than usual.

3. Purchase a local numbing cream and apply about an hour before your appointment. Apply the cream to your inner thighs and pubic region.

4. About 30 minutes before your appointment take a normal dosage of mild pain medication such as Ibuprofen or Naproxen Sodium.

5. Wear loose clothing to your appointment. Be sure to avoid tight jeans and silk or nylon underwear.

The Procedure

6. Remove your pants and underwear. You will lie down on a table, feet apart and knees up. Some attendants may cover half of your pubic area with a towel and work on the other side.

7. Be sure the specialist wears gloves and uses a fresh wax applicator. It is okay if the bottles of wax appear to have been used before. However, the applicators on the “lids” should be new. Always ask questions if you are concerned.

8. Ask the specialist to add powder to your skin to dry it. This will allow the wax to stick better. If your hair is too long, the wax specialist may trim it at this time.

9. Ask if you can help to make the process any easier. The attendant will wax the top of your pubic bone first. This is the most painful. You may be asked to help hold the skin tight, which gives you a cleaner, less painful experience.

10. Prepare yourself. The specialist will start at the inner crease of your thighs and then move to the pubic area. The anal region is waxed last and is generally the least painful. You may request to omit the anal region if you choose. You may also request a thin strip of hair, the “landing strip,” be left on your pubic bone.

11. Get dressed. He will provide lotion to rub onto your pubic region. This will moisturize the area, which is essential after waxing. It also helps prevents ingrown hairs.

Gallbladder Diet For Diabetics

Adhering to a low-fat diet is the best way of stopping problems that arise due to an out of whack gallbladder. While the total caloric intake from fat should be less than 30 percent, many diabetics ingest far more empty calories through the use of alcohol and fatty foods. This type of food and drink can easily lead to gallstones and other gallbladder problems. But diabetics can enjoy a healthier lifestyle through diets that keep the gallbladder in mind.

Understanding The Gallbladder

Positioned underneath the liver, the gallbladder works in tandem with the liver to play a vital part in the way the body digests food. Bile is created by the liver and is kept inside the gallbladder. Whenever food needs to be digested, the gallbladder releases bile which assists with the process. It's extremely important to make sure that the gallbladder is working well. Gallstones and other problems with the organ can seriously affect how food is digested by the body.

Diet

Consume foods that are nutrient rich and low fat such as veggies, beans, fruits, low-fat dairy items, whole grain breads, fish, and chicken. Keep in mind that limiting your intake of sweets and foods high in saturated fat will also help stabilize diabetes while promoting a healthier gallbladder. It's easy to choose convenience over quality when you get hungry. But avoiding fast food restaurants and desserts will go a long way towards enhancing your diet. The regular eating of foods that are low in trans fats and saturated fats will also lower your risk for disease.

Eating Plans

Since consuming too many calories results in excess fat and weight, it's important that you eat only the food in your diabetes food plan and control the size of your portions. Meeting with a dietitian can help you figure out a sensible serving size that your body requires to maintain a healthy weight. To keep your gallbladder working correctly, eat multiple meals and snacks per day that are low in saturated fats.

What Does A Slipped Lapband Look Like

A slipped Lap-Band shows up on an X-ray.

A Lap-Band is an adjustable silicone band that is placed around the stomach to limit the amount of food a patient can eat in order to facilitate weight loss. Sometimes, however, the band slips out of place. More often, when doctors say a patient has a slipped Lap-Band, what they really mean is that the stomach has slipped up above the band.

External Appearance

A slipped Lap-Band cannot be seen on the outside of the body. The patient's abdomen appears normal even when the band has slipped.

Internal Appearance

If you could look inside the patient's abdomen, you would see a bulge above the band if the band had slipped. You might also see that the band had become twisted.

Anterior Slippage

Anterior Lap-Band slippage occurs when the front part of the stomach slips up over the band. Then the bulge would be seen at the front of the stomach.

Posterior Slippage

Posterior Lap-Band slippage occurs when the back part of the stomach slips up over the band. Then the bulge would be seen at the back of the stomach. Posterior slippage does not occur very often these days, though, because of the surgical techniques now used. It was more common in the 1990s.

Looking for a Slipped Band

To look for a slipped Lap-Band, doctors use an upper GI series X-ray. The patient drinks a barium solution while X-rays are taken and the slipped band shows up on the X-ray.

What Does An Excess Of Norepinephrine Cause

Your body maintains a delicate balance of hormones and neurotransmitters in order to maintain health and optimum mental activity. Of these substances, norepinephrine plays a major role. Therefore, an excess of this substance can produce unwanted effects.

Identification

Norepinephrine is a neurotransmitter that effects various organs of the body as well as the brain by either stimulating or inhibiting nerves, muscles and glands.

Function

Norepinephrine affects your arousal and attention levels as well as ability to remember and learn. When in a stressful event, Norepinephrine activates your body's fight-or-flight response.

Effects

An excess of norepinephrine acts as a powerful stimulant, causing physical expressions such as a rapid heartbeat, chest pains, nausea, dizziness, headaches and high blood pressure. Emotional expressions include fear, high anxiety and panic attacks.

Theories/Speculation

Protein sources such as meat, nuts and egg whites provide the raw material needed to manufacture optimal levels of norepinephrine. According to researcher William J. Walsh, "most neurotransmitter imbalances appear genetic in nature and involve abnormal metabolism, absorption, and/or storage of food nutrients by the body."

Solution

Doctors treat an excess of norepinephrine with alpha and beta blocking drugs. Natural treatments include taking a green tea extract known as theanine and/or the essential amino acid arginine, as well as employing lifestyle strategies that reduce anxiety.

Rice Diet Facts

The Rice Diet Clinic in Durham, North Carolina, offers an on-site, medically supervised program called the Rice Dieta that incorporates lifestyle changes along with strict limitations on fat, protein, salt and sugar, which it claims leads to significant and rapid weight loss.

Identification

The three-phase plan is a very low-calorie program focusing on complex carbohydrates and whole foods like whole grains, beans, fresh vegetables and fruit, non-fat dairy products and lean protein--preferably certain kinds of fish. The diet is intended to not only be instrumental for weight loss, but also to detoxify the body and prevent or reverse chronic diseases.

History

The original Rice Diet Program was created in Durham in 1939 by Walter Kempner. Clients checked into residential facilities for an intensive program lasting two to four weeks. Kempner was a professor of medicine at Duke University, where he investigated the effect of diet on disorders such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. He found that many diseases were rare in people who ate rice as a staple.

Current Program

The program continues today, with a staff of registered dietitians, exercise physiologists, stress management instructors and other healthcare providers. The program features classes, workshops, yoga and meditation. The book "The Rice Diet Solution," by registered dietitian Kitty Rosati and cardiologist Robert Rosati, was written to guide dieters through the program at home.

Features

The first week is for detoxifying, with very little food and no sodium. The next phase is for weight loss, with protein allowed one day a week. The third phase is maintenance, and is less strict. The diet has somewhat complicated instructions. One particular day in the weight loss phase, for instance, calls for a breakfast with two starches and one fruit; lunch with three starches, three vegetables and one fruit; and dinner with three starches, three protein or two dairy, three vegetables and one fruit.

Considerations

The plan provides detailed meal plans and recipes, and the structure can make it easier. Results from the Durham on-site program show excellent potential for rapid weight loss, and the maintenance phase addresses one of the biggest problems with many diets--the tendency to put weight back on. A person tackling this diet will need great self-discipline, since it is very restrictive.

The Use Of Potassium Nitrate

Potassium nitrate, commonly known as niter or saltpeter, is a chemical compound that is denoted chemically by the formula KNO3. Potassium nitrate is one of the naturally occurring sources of nitrogen, commonly present in soils and rocks in countries like India, Spain, Egypt and Italy. It is a crystalline and colorless compound, which has been used for varied purposes since ancient times, especially in the making of explosives and fertilizers.

Utilization as a Component of Fertilizers

The most significant and widespread use of potassium nitrate all over the world is as a component of fertilizers. Potassium, nitrogen and phosphorous are the macro nutrients (nutrients required in large quantities) needed by plant species for their normal growth, and potassium nitrate provides ample quantities of these nutrients.

Preserving Food

Another common use of potassium nitrate is as a food preservative. Since the Middle Ages potassium nitrate was utilized as a preserving agent for food, especially meat products. However, as a result of the inconsistent results, the usage of the compound was discontinued, and subsequently it was replaced by the more effective and better nitrate compounds such as nitrites and sodium nitrate among others. However despite this, KNO3 is still used in many food-related processes such as curing meat products and in the production of brine, utilized in making corned beef.

Use of Potassium Nitrate in Making Explosives

Potassium nitrate is widely used in the making of explosives all over the world. KNO3 is one of the major components of gunpowder. Gunpowder is a black-colored compound, which is formed when 75 to 80% of potassium nitrate reacts with 10% of sulphur and about 10 to 15% of charcoal. Gunpowder is used in the production of various explosives like grenades, bombs, and firecrackers.

Potassium nitrate is also commonly utilized as an amateur solid-rocket propellant, which uses the above-mentioned explosive and combustible properties of the compound.

Production of Cigarettes

Potassium nitrate is frequently used during the production and manufacturing of cigarettes all over the globe, as it greatly helps in making the tobacco burn evenly.

Other Uses

Potassium nitrate is also used as a flux agent in metalwork as well as in the manufacturing of glass products, and in metallurgical reactions.

Signs Of Highfunctioning Autism

High-functioning autism is sometimes referred to as pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified or Asperger syndrome. Generally, children with high-functioning autism have an IQ of at least 85. Autism is a brain disorder that impairs communication and social interaction.

Sensory Overload

Children with high-functioning autism often have sensory issues. They might not successfully deal with all of the stimuli presented to them on a daily basis. They might be upset by bright lights, loud noises or even the texture of certain foods.

Emotional Issues

Children with high-functioning autism do want to interact socially with others, but they don't know how. Thus, they might suffer from depression or anxiety. Also, they might have extreme fears of certain things such as thunderstorms.

Coping Mechanisms

Children with high-functioning autism might self-stimulate by hand flapping or other repetitive motions or speech when they are experiencing anxiety. Also, they might have a security object with them at all times such as a blanket, toys or other inanimate objects.

Language Development

Children with high-functioning autism might develop language skills later than their peers, but in time, most will have an adequate vocabulary. However, they might have difficulty with comprehension, especially when asked to make inferences. They might especially have trouble comprehending figurative language.

Motor-Skill Development

Children with high-functioning autism might have a delay in both gross-motor and fine-motor skills. Occupational therapy might be needed to master skills such as writing, buttoning and other motor skills.

Social-Skill Impairment

Children with high-functioning autism might have difficulty beginning and maintaining a conversation. They might want to talk only about one topic. These children can benefit from direct instruction in social skills. Also, they might have difficulty discerning nonverbal cues.

Obsessions

Children with high-functioning autism might have a favorite toy or hobby and not want to do anything that does not focus on that. The child might talk incessantly about these obsessions.

What Chinese Herbs To Take For Spleen Qi

What Chinese Herbs to Take for Spleen Qi

Chinese medicine works on the principle that you have energy coursing through your body, called qi. When the energy moves freely, you are in good health. If it becomes blocked, then you begin to experience symptoms of disease. The goal then becomes to remove the blocked energy and help get your qi moving again. Chinese herbalists use different herbs to do this depending on where the blockage is occurring.

Qi and the Spleen

Traditional Chinese medicine views the spleen as one of the most important organs in the body. Practitioners say the spleen is responsible for all digestive movement from nutrient absorption to elimination. A sluggish or poorly functioning spleen results in a number of health problems. The spleen is the point in the body where qi is replenished, so fatigue from spleen problems is common. Digestive problems like nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are also associated with the spleen. Anxiety and unclear thinking can result from energy blockages in the spleen.

The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, written around 1590, states, "When the spleen is healthy it can generate all living things. If it becomes depleted, it can bring about the hundred diseases." Keeping the energy of the spleen moving properly is important for the proper function of nearly every system within your body.

Chinese Herbs for Spleen Qi

The spleen is important for overall health. Fortunately, there are many different Chinese herbs that can help to ease different problems with the spleen's qi. Some of the most common include astragalus, ginger, clove, licorice, lotus seed and ginseng.

Astragalus helps with decreased appetite, fatigue, bloating, diarrhea and weakness. Ginger helps with abdominal pain, loss of appetite and weakness. Clove helps with digestive problems that lead to poor circulation and cold extremities. Licorice helps with weakness and diarrhea, as does lotus seed. Lotus seed also helps with fatigue and low appetite. Ginseng acts as a supportive herb, helping other herbs like astragalus and ginger to function better.

Use Chinese Herbs

Chinese medicine relies on herbs both to cure and prevent diseases. To promote a healthier spleen you can take the herbs above on your own, or you can work with a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine. A practitioner may be able to refine and tailor the herbal combinations you use for a better result.

Often Chinese herbs are delivered through a decoction (a very strong tea), a syrup or a salve. You may also find some preparations available in capsule or tablet forms.

Different people respond differently to herbal remedies, so some trial and error may be required to find the remedy that best relieves the symptoms of a sluggish spleen.

Biblical Symbols Found In Chinese Oracles

Some believe that Chinese characters hold clues to the Christian Bible

Some Biblical and secular scholars have observed correspondences between the composition of contemporary and ancient Chinese characters and symbols and stories in the Christian Bible. Since Chinese pictographs contain several images, a reading of the meaning of these is believed to tell the Biblical story of Genesis and reveal connections with Christian concepts of sacrifice and humility

The Chinese System of Writing

The Chinese system of writing uses characters (hanzi) which originally represented people, places and things. These pictures have become increasingly stylized, and characters have been combined to express new concepts, abstract ideas and things. The components of these complex characters, when read individually along with the general meaning, appear to tell the story of the Biblical book of Genesis.

Chinese Characters and the Bible

Chinese missionary C H Kang and medical pathologist Ethel Nelson first observed correspondences between Chinese characters and the Bible in 1976. They claimed that when the components of Chinese characters are read individually, they correspond to events in Genesis, the first book of the Bible. The character for "forbidden," for example, contains the elements "tree" plus "tree" and "god." According to Kang and Nelson, this refers to God's forbidding Adam and Eve to eat from two trees in the Biblical Garden of Eden.

Chinese Characters and Genesis

Building on Kang and Nelson's observations, some Biblical and secular scholars have connected the complete book of Genesis to numerous modern Chinese characters. While Biblical scholarship has focused on demonstrating the truth of the Bible's account of creation, linguists and anthropologists explore these relationships for clues to the sharing of cultures and beliefs. Skeptics point out, however, that Chinese writing appears not to have been influenced from other cultures, and the stylized nature of the characters leave the correlations open to interpretation.

"Dragon Bones" -- the Chinese Bone Oracles

Dating from the Shang Dynasty (1300 -- 1046 BC) the Chinese oracle bones are the earliest examples of Chinese writing. These pieces of turtle shell and bone were used for divination and the recording of events, and since their discovery in 1899, scholars have identified about 2,000 characters. Among these, numerous instances of the element representing "sheep" or ""lamb" have been identified, and Biblical scholars suggest a connection with Christian concepts of humility, sacrifice and meekness.

Does Having Diabetes Make You Infertile

Diabetes is a disorder related to your metabolism that causes frequent urination and thirst. The most common form is diabetes mellitus, which causes high levels of sugar in the blood because your body doesn't properly release or use the insulin that changes sugar into energy. The number of people with diabetes is rising and complications in people with the disease are increasing. These include heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, blindness, blood vessel damage, amputation, erectile dysfunction and even infertility.

Identification

Insulin is a hormone that helps move glucose into cells where it's turned into energy. When there's not enough insulin or it doesn't work properly to break down glucose, this results in a hormone imbalance. All the hormones in our bodies are linked so that an imbalance in one can cause an imbalance in others. When insulin isn't balanced, neither are estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. An imbalance in these hormones can cause infertility.

Expert Insight

In reports presented July 9, 2008 at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction in Spain, doctors said men with diabetes that were overweight or underweight showed sperm RNA was altered and DNA was damaged. A diabetic can lose the ability for repair of sperm DNA, and there's no way to get that ability back once it's gone.

Features

Another way diabetes can cause infertility is development of a condition called retrograde ejaculation. When diabetes damages the nerves that close the opening to the bladder during orgasm, semen is ejaculated into the bladder. Urine tests can show if this is happening. Doctors haven't yet found a way to repair this type of nerve damage, but semen can be retrieved from the bladder to be used for artificial insemination.

Considerations

Not all diabetics become infertile. It depends on diet exercise, lifestyle, smoking and genetics. Men with a normal body mass index have higher levels of normal sperm and a higher volume of sperm than men who are too thin or obese. Controlling weight gain and loss can prevent infertility in men with diabetes who are infertile because of fluctuations in body weight.

Prevention/Solution

The best way to treat infertility caused by diabetes is to control blood sugar levels. Eat protein with every meal and include protein whenever you eat carbohydrates. Avoid sugar and eat whole grains, oats, and vegetables. Exercise and take vitamins. Everyone's body reacts differently to food, so keep a chart of how foods affect your body and avoid those that cause problems.

Use An Inversion Table

The first time you approach an inversion table may be intimidating. Being on it for the first time can make you feel uncoordinated. But don't give up. Once you learn a few basic things while on the inversion table, you will be able to enjoy inverted workouts or allow you spine to decompress with ease.

Instructions

Use an Invserion Table

1. Consult a doctor before trying any new exercise regimen involving inversion therapy. Specific back injuries and heart problems may prevent you from being able to fully invert.

2. Set your inversion angle. A locking knob should allow you to lock the maximum inversion. Start with a mild inversion and increase as you become more adept with the table. Partial inversion (up to 60 degrees) is often enough traction for most people to gain benefit. Full inversion is 90 degrees.

3. Secure yourself into the table according to manufacturer's instructions. Different inversion tables may vary slightly in do this. Always make sure you are in correctly to prevent injury.

4. Ask a friend to spot you the first few times you use the table. Since it requires movement in a plane of motion you are not used to, it is best to have someone assist you to make sure you are comfortable with moving yourself up and down safely.

5. Hold the handle bars and move yourself slowly into an inverted position. If you are not used to being upside down, you may get dizzy. Pull yourself immediately with the handle bars if you become dizzy. Do short inversions slowly increasing the time frame to help your body adjust to this.

6. Hang to decompress. This stretches the spine and allows muscles to loosen. You may also do an inverted workout routine such as arm exercises or abdominal routines.

Do Standing Yoga Mudra With A Yoga Strap

Standing yoga mudra pose is a forward bending posture that helps to stretch and open the shoulders. It is a deep stretch that requires a certain level of flexibility on the shoulder joint. If you shoulders are very tight you may have difficulty going deep enough into the posture to gain a benefit. Using a yoga strap can help you go further into this stretch and loosen the shoulders.

Instructions

Standing Yoga Mudra

1. Stand up straight with the legs wide apart. Turn the feet out slightly. Hold the yoga strap in your hands, behind your back with the palms facing away from the body. The wider your hands are apart the easier this stretch is.

2. Bend the knees and reach the buttocks back as if you were about to sit in a chair.

3. Keeping the back straight and reaching out from the hip go into a forward bend.

4. Rotating at the shoulder joint, lift the hands out and away from your body. Pull gently on the yoga strap.

5. Move into a full forward bend, lifting your hands up and overhead as far as possible.

6. If your back is sensitive keep the knees bent. You can also work with straight legs if that is comfortable.

7. Hold for five to ten deep breaths and focus on relaxing your shoulders and bringing your hands overhead and towards the floor.

8. To release this posture make sure you engage your abdominal and leg muscles to come back up.

Lung Cancer & Cigarettes

Smokers face an increased risk of lung cancer, which can be deadly. The chemicals in cigarettes are highly toxic, and many have been shown to be cancer-causing agents. Those exposed to secondhand smoke are also at increased risk for lung cancer. The best way to avoid this risk is to stop smoking today. Talk to a medical professional about strategies and medications that will help you quit.

Smoking and Lung Cancer

According to the National Cancer Institute, smoking is the single biggest cause of preventable death in the United States. NCI states that cigarette smoking causes 87 percent of Lung Cancer. Lung cancer is a particularly deadly form of cancer. It is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women.

Chemicals in Cigarettes

The National Cancer Institute has cataloged more than 4,000 harmful chemicals in cigarettes. This number includes more than 60 cancer-causing compounds. These chemicals include tar, carbon monoxide, arsenic and lead. Smoking negatively affects every major organ in the body. A smoker's risk of developing lung disease depends on the amount of time that she has smoked, the frequency of the smoking, and the number of cigarettes she smokes each day.

Secondhand Smoke and Lung Cancer

The danger is not limited to the smoker. Inhaling secondhand smoke on a regular basis also increases the risk of developing lung cancer. The National Cancer institute reports that second hand smoke is considered a carcinogen, and that 3,000 lung cancer deaths a year are due to secondhand smoke.

The Benefits of Quitting

The only way to prevent the risk of lung cancer that is associated with cigarette smoking is to quit. The National Cancer Institute points out that the earlier you quit the more positive the impact will be on your health. People who quit before they are 50 years old reduce their risk of dying in the next 15 years by half.

Talk to a Medical Professional

If you are concerned about the effect of cigarettes on your lungs, or want to know more about the connection between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, talk to your doctor. He can tell you about the risks associated with a smoking habit, and help you come up with a strategy for quitting altogether.

Ingredients In Cough Medicine

Over the counter cough medicines work by suppressing coughs and thinning mucus, and these effects are temporary. Most coughs do not require medical treatment and will improve over time by letting the illness run its course. In 2008, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association labeled over the counter cough and cold medicines to indicate they should not be used in children age 4 and under due to safety issues with the active ingredients.

Antitussives

Antitussives are ingredients in cough medicine that suppress coughing, and dextromethorphan is the most commonly used antitussive in over-the-counter cough medicines.

Expectorants

The only over-the-counter expectorant that can be used as an ingredient in cough medicine is guaifenesin, which thins mucus in the nose and throat.

Pain relievers

Many cough medicines contain pain relievers--such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen--to reduce chest pain from coughing and other aches and pains from colds.

Decongestants

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, decongestants may be added to cough medicines to reduce inflammation of the sinuses and relieve nasal congestion.

Antihistamines

Antihistamines may be added to cough medicines to reduce sneezing, itchy eyes and runny noses along with coughs caused by allergies.

Side effects

Combination cough medicines can thicken mucus and make it harder to clear from the sinuses and lungs, which may actually make coughs get worse.

Considerations

Not all coughs should be treated with cough medicines--such as coughs from smoking, asthma and air pollution--since coughing is the body's natural reaction to get rid of something in the lungs that does not belong.

Korean Ginseng How Much Do You Need Daily

Ginseng and Mushroom Elixers.

Korean ginseng, also known as red ginseng, red panax ginseng or panax ginseng, has a range of positive health benefits. Ginseng roots often resemble the human form and are sometimes called "manroot" or "root of man." Among the health benefits listed for ginseng are: lower blood sugar, enhanced immune system, antioxidant properties and stimulation of the production of immune cells called "killer T-cells."

Ginseng Forms

Ginseng is available in a variety of forms. Many people consider the whole, dried root to be the best. However, powdered forms, slices of root and the distilled essence of the ginseng root are readily available. In addition, ginseng teas are quite common in Asian groceries. Higher quality, more expensive forms are generally thought to have more and better active ingredients.

Daily Recommendation

Regardless of the form of the ginseng, a recommended daily dose is equivalent to approximately 1 to 2g dried ginseng root. Many commercially available ginseng products contain less ginseng than they list on the packaging, so buying your ginseng or ginseng products from a reputable vendor is a good idea. Ginseng can be taken daily for up to 3 months. However, after 3 months, it is often a good idea to take a break from the ginseng for a month or 2.

Who Should Not Take Ginseng

Although ginseng is safe, people with high blood pressure should consult a physician before taking ginseng. People on the monoamine oxidase inhibitor phenelzine may experience manic-like symptoms. If you are taking any kind of anti-depressant or psychiatric medication, it is important to consult your physician before taking ginseng. Pregnant women should also avoid ginseng without first consulting a doctor.

Varieties of Ginseng

Although in general, Korean of Chinese red panax ginseng is considered the best, red panax ginseng from other growers is also considered outstanding. The best example is red panax ginseng grown in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. This ginseng is considered excellent and, due to its relatively abundant supply, is much cheaper than the more rare, and often counterfeit, Korean and Chinese red panax ginseng.

Prevent Groin Injuries While Breakdancing

For breakdancers, groin injuries are all too common. The "groin pull" occurs when breakdancers do moves like flares, windmills and certain headspins. I don't think there's a breakdancer out there who can claim to not have had this happen at least once or twice in his breakdancing careers!

Instructions

Preventing Groin Injuries in Breakdancing

1. Do some inner-thigh stretch exercises before attempting moves such as the flares, windmills, and headspins (especially if the weather outside is on the cold side or you have been sitting around without moving at all prior to dancing). These warm-ups will help maintain your groin flexibility and prevent pulls.

2. Make sure your muscles and tendons are flexible. Stiff muscles are the absolute worst, and you'll be on the fast track to nursing a pulled groin if you don't maintain flexibility in your body at all times. Tight, stiff muscles and tendons can be pushed beyond their natural movement range easily, therefore making pulled muscles, strains, and sprains very common.

3. Strengthen and condition your muscles! This will help prevent groin strain. Machine adductions and cable adductions are two great strengthening exercises you can try.

4. Increase the time and intensity of your activity. This can prevent overuse and trauma to your working muscles. Proper biomechanics and strength of muscles can also reduce muscle strain risk.

Lapband Slippage Symptoms

Lapband Slippage Symptoms

Weight loss surgery has become one of the most popular ways to address chronic and long-term obesity in the United States. Obesity is an epidemic and can lead to many long-term health issues, such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems and more. One method of weight loss surgery is the lapband, which is where a band is placed around the stomach and sutured into place. This restricts the amount of food the stomach is able to contain and results in substantial and permanent weight loss. Sometimes the band slips out of place, however, causing discomfort and pain.

Reflux

According to Mark Pleatman, MD, one of the most common symptoms of lapband slippage is acid reflux. Often this is an early indicator that stomach acids are being regurgitated back up into the esophagus. Acid reflux can become a chronic problem and can result in significant stomach and esophagus pain. Treatment for acid reflux involves lifestyle changes, such as adjusting eating times and the volume of food being eaten. Also, spicy foods are eliminated from the diet, along with alcoholic, carbonated and caffeinated beverages.

Nausea

Nausea is another common symptom of lapband slippage. Nausea often occurs because food is not passing easily into the stomach. Pressure may be felt as food is trapped in the prolapsed stomach, resulting in nausea as the stomach attempts to rid itself of the food. If nausea becomes chronic, the lapband may need to be adjusted surgically to set it back in place. In severe cases of lapband slippage, the band may need to be removed completely. In this case, an alternative form of gastric bypass may be used, such as a roux-en-Y.

Vomiting

Vomiting sometimes occurs early in the process as the individual becomes used to eating smaller volumes of food and the body adjusts. Vomiting may also accompany nausea if food becomes trapped in a prolapsed stomach. Chronic vomiting can become a problem and stress the esophagus and muscles of the stomach.

Decreased Appetite

According to Arturo Rodriguez, MD, another symptom of lapband slippage and stomach prolapse is decreased appetite. Often, this is the result of chronic nausea and vomiting as the body begins to reject food, since every time the person eats, he feels uncomfortable. Although decreased appetite is the goal of weight loss surgery, after the initial stages of adjustment, decreased appetite should be a warning sign that something significant has changed.

Chemical Properties Of Zinc In Galvanized Steel

Galvanized steel is used for many outdoor applications.

Galvanized steel is the common name for steel treated with an outer coating of zinc as a protection against corrosion. While true galvanizing is an electrochemical process that forms a metallic bond between the zinc and steel, galvanizing commonly refers to other methods of coating including zinc paints. Although the Romans used primitive zinc coatings, Luigi Galvani first discovered the electroplating process used for applying zinc to steel in 1772. Galvanized steel has been a common building material since the middle of the 19th century. Zinc is generally considered a low-toxicity metal, and small amounts are required in the human diet.

Physical Barrier

After galvanizing, zinc will react with oxygen in the air to form a zinc oxide, a white powdery coating on the surface. The zinc oxide will react with water molecules in the air to form zinc-hydroxide, a common and non-toxic form of zinc. The zinc oxide will then react with carbon dioxide, a common atmospheric gas, and form zinc carbonate. Zinc carbonate will tightly bond itself to the remaining zinc, and form a hard, durable and waterproof coating that protects the zinc from mechanical damage.

Impermeability to Moisture

Zinc and its associated oxides provide a high resistance to the flow of water and water vapor. This is a very desirable characteristic for the protection of steel, since corrosion cannot take place without the presence of water. Since the water is unable to penetrate the zinc coatings, the zinc coating protects the steel from corrosion.

Self-Repair

Abrasion or other physical contact may remove or damage the zinc oxide and zinc carbonate coatings. When this happens, the atmospheric moisture and gasses can attach the zinc. The reaction will reform the protective oxide and carbonate coatings, again protecting the underlying zinc from further damage. As a result, galvanized coatings are self-healing.

Cathodic Protection

If the underlying steel comes in contact to moisture, zinc forms a sacrificial anode to protect it. Similar to the function of a battery and the sacrificial zinc anodes on boats, the zinc will form a small electrical current flow that will prevent the corrosion of the iron oxide on the steel. This property allows the atmospheric exposure of a small area of the underlying steel without any rust or corrosion forming.
