Keep A Journal To Promote Mental Health

Keeping a journal has helped many people get in touch with their feelings and emotions, both conscious and subconscious, and allowed them to develop a plan of action for achieving peace and happiness in their lives.


Instructions


Start to journal on a regular basis.


1. Begin writing. Whether you have a fancy cloth covered journal or an old notebook with half the pages missing, start today to 'journal' on a daily basis and it may be the beginning to finding answers to the past, to a plan for your future and to happiness in the days to come.








2. Be honest and open when journaling. You are talking to yourself about the past, present, and future and, if you lie, or restrict the content, it would be like cheating at solitary, you hurt no one but yourself.


3. Write from the heart about past hurts, the way you view events in your life, and especially how things make you feel. Feelings are neither right or wrong. When written down, you can view them objectively and decide if they are true or out of line with reality.


4. Remember that negative events and feelings are what make us move on in life, whether it be in relationships or jobs. So, use your journal as an opportunity to be a better you or to move on to better things so that you will be happy with life and appreciate the positives that already exist.








5. Read your journal, looking back over the months or years that you've been writing, and witness your growth in understanding yourself and others who have influenced your life. It may help you forgive and let go of past hurts or at least see how these events made you move on to a better place.
