Re-create the 1950s with icons of the era.
Poodle skirts, leather jackets and doo-wop----party-goers will feel as if they have traveled back in time at a 1950s-theme party. Whether you are celebrating a birthday or you just want to have a good time, this blast from the past theme is appropriate for all ages---for kids, those who lived during the decade and everyone in between.
Invitations
Give your guests a glimpse of what the party will be like with the invitations. You can choose one of these two options.
Records:
Use actual records as your party invitations. Visit thrift stores, where you can purchase old 45s. Use the records as stencils to create a label that tells the details of the party by tracing them on paper and cutting the circles out. Write the party details on the circles and tape or glue them to the records. Hand-deliver the invitations while dressed in 1950s attire.
'50s Chevy:
If you are mailing your invitations, consider using this idea. Print out a picture of a '50s Chevy from an online clip art site (see Resources). Hand-write the party information on the car invitations and send them out.
Whichever invitation you decide on, don't forget to ask guests to sport 1950s-inspired clothing to the shindig.
Decor
Turn your party area into a 1950s soda fountain with some simple decorations. Bring in red vinyl chairs or cover existing chairs with red vinyl fabric. If possible, create a black and white checkered dance floor by attaching black and white linoleum tiles to a piece of cardboard or wood and laying it over your existing floor. Hang records on the walls and pictures of '50s icons: Buddy Holly, James Dean, Elvis Presley and Marylin Monroe, for example. Rent a real jukebox to play tunes from the decade, or attach a picture of a jukebox to a wall and play '50s music on a CD player.
Costumes
Guests can become part of the decor as well by donning clothing inspired by the era. Guys can sport leather jackets, blue jeans and white T-shirts or letter sweaters, chinos and plaid button-down shirts. The gals can wear poodle skirts, bobby socks and ponytails in their hair or pencil skirts, leather jackets and saddle shoes. The group will appear as if they have stepped right out of the '50s.
Party Food
The menu for a '50s party is full of fun and tasty food. For drinks, serve malteds, milkshakes, egg creams and Coke in glass bottles. Featured foods include hamburgers and cheeseburgers, hot dogs, pizza, barbecued chicken, fondue and ice cream sundaes. Think of food that you would order at a diner, and you'll be on the right track for your party fare.
Activities
Keep guests entertained with some fun '50s-inspired activities. Have them dance the hand jive, the swing, the stroll and the bop. Play a game of '50s trivia where guests have to answer questions pertaining to the era. A game of "Name That Tune," where guests have to guess the name of a '50s song after only hearing a few seconds of it, can also be a lot of fun.
