Home Health Care Vs Nursing Home

Choosing between options for the care of older loved ones can be a frightening and difficult decision. Often nursing homes are reserved as a last resort, but providing effective health care at home can cost more than many families can afford.

Patient Comfort

Most nursing homes have an institutional feel that may cause stress with some patients. When given the option between the two, the majority of patients will choose to stay home over a facility.

Cost

The price of home health care can be much higher than an average nursing home. The in-home care for patients requiring attention around the clock will be more costly than those that just need help at certain times with certain tasks like meals and bathing.

Coverage

Long-term home health care is usually not covered under regular insurance, so patients who don't have a plan that specifies reimbursement for this care will be responsible for the entire cost. With nursing home care, once the patient's assets have been depleted, Medicare will generally cover the cost of care.

Staff

The patient's family is in control of the in-home health care staff; they can conduct the interviews/background checks and be certain that the aides hired are trusted. Nursing home staffs are usually background-checked prior to hiring, but it's difficult to personally monitor every individual employed by a large facility.

Level of Care

Though advancements have been made in the equipment available for home health care, few home health situations can compare to fully equipped and properly staffed nursing homes.
