Shrink Ostrich Skin Boots

A cowboy needs a pair of good-fitting boots to get the job done.

There are few things more annoying than a pair of boots that are either too loose or too tight. Since ostrich skin boots can be very expensive, it is important for them to fit well so they can be worn and enjoyed. Wearing a second pair of thick socks to take up the extra space in the boot may help but it can also be very uncomfortable. Professional ice skaters and cowboys alike know a simple trick: wear the boots barefoot after they have been soaked with vinegar and achieve a custom fit.

Instructions

1. Pre-treat leather with a commercial leather protector before attempting to shrink the ostrich boots. Apply leather protector to prevent discoloration or staining of the ostrich leather. Allow leather protector to dry completely before proceeding.

2. Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar.

3. Spray ostrich boots thoroughly from the inside with the white vinegar as it will make the leather pliable.

4. Put ostrich boots on without socks so that as they dry, they will mold to your foot. The heat from your foot, along with the vinegar, will help to shrink the boot.

5. Wear boots for 15 to 20 minutes or until they feel comfortable.

6. To finish the shrinking process, dry the boots near a heat source.

7. After boots are dry, apply boot polish with a soft cloth to restore the ostrich leather as shrinking may make it dry and brittle.

Tips Warnings

The vinegar smell will disappear as soon as the shoes are dry. Using vinegar instead of plain water has the added benefit of removing odor and disinfecting the boot.

Tight boots or shoes can be broken in quickly by walking around in them for about 15-20 minutes while wearing vinegar-soaked socks. Leave them to dry in a cool place afterwards to prevent shrinkage.
