Bathtub Shower Installation Instructions

Installing a shower to a bathtub adds to the value of any home. When adding a shower to an existing bathtub, pay close attention to the fixture. In most cases, it is easier to purchase a new fixture that allows for a shower. This eliminates the frustration many experience when trying to match a shower head with an existing fixture. Minimal plumbing skills are required for a project like this due to PVC adapters and the ease of connecting PVC pipe as opposed to sweating copper.

Instructions

1. Turn off the main valve supplying water to the house with a crescent wrench. Sometimes this is next to the water meter, while some houses have one next to the water heater. If this is the case, it will be on the water line feeding the water heater.

2. Remove the wall covering around the existing bathtub water faucet with a utility knife. Disconnect the existing faucet from the water lines with a pipe wrench.

3. Install the new faucet/shower fixture according to the manufacturer's instructions. Be certain the connections are tight.

4. Apply PVC glue to the ends of the PVC shower water line. Install the threaded elbow on one end and the threaded adapter on the other end.

5. Secure the 2-by-4-by-14#xBD;-inch lumber between the studs with the 2-inch drywall screws and the variable-speed drill (Phillips-head screw tip). This will hold the shower water line securely.

6. Wrap the threads of the threaded adapter with thread seal tape. Insert that end in the shower pipe connection on the faucet and tighten it. Be certain the threaded elbow is facing the right direction for the shower head extension pipe. Secure the shower water line to the 2-by-4 with the #xBD;-inch pipe clamp and the #xBE;-inch screws.

7. Install the PVC plug in the end of the adapter elbow and tighten it until it is snug. Turn the water on, check for leaks and turn the water off. Release the pressure in the lines by turning the faucet on.

8. Remove the PVC plug. Replace the wall around the new faucets and shower. Next, wrap the threads on the shower head extension pipe with thread seal tape on both ends. Insert one end into the threaded elbow and tighten it. Install the shower head. Turn the water back on.

Tips Warnings

Twist the PVC connections 1/4 turn when securing them to the shower water line. This helps create a solid bond.

Do not use a pipe wrench on PVC pipes.
