The liver is the body's filter. It removes toxins from the blood and aids in a variety of processes such as digestion, immune function and cholesterol control. Providing the body with certain herbs may assist the liver in its cleansing function. Pure water and natural substances such as lemon juice are the easiest ways to keep the liver in good working order.
Drink Water
The human body is comprised of 60 to 75 percent water depending upon age and body composition. Water is essential for flushing toxins out of the body and needs to be replenished daily. Provide pure, clean water for the liver to work with. Water that comes out of a faucet has probably been through a water purification system that uses chlorine and other chemicals to kill harmful bacteria and viruses. Purify water further by using a water filtration system on home taps that remove chlorine and other chemicals.
Lemon Cleanses
Lemon juice can help purge toxins from the liver. Use fresh lemon juice, organic if it is available, but not frozen or reconstituted. Start the morning with the juice of a freshly squeezed medium-sized lemon in a cup of hot water. The lemon juice helps with digestion and sets up the cleansing process. It can also aid in normalizing the body's pH, and has antibacterial and antiviral capabilities. Find other ways to slip lemon juice into the diet by using it in homemade salad dressing or as a regular addition to a glass of water or tea.
Alternative Solutions
There are many herbs and plants that assist in cleansing the liver. The Mayo Clinic lists black cohosh, chaparral, comfrey, valerian and scullcap. Milk thistle is known to protect the liver and can block the harmful affects of too much acetaminophen, which is taxing on the liver. Red clover cleanses the liver and acts as a natural antibiotic. Discuss alternative treatments with a physician before making any herb part of a daily or weekly routine. Herbal treatments can have side effects and may interact with other medications and supplements.
