Change A Name On A Driving License

Getting married can mean changing your name on your driver's license

Your driver's license identifies not only your ability to drive, but also who you are. You show your license as a common form of identification when writing checks or using a credit card. This can be difficult when you have changed your name, as the license will no longer match your identity. To change the name on your driver's license, you must go to your local driving office and present legal proof of your new name.

Instructions

1. Obtain a certified document stating your change of name. Acceptable documents include a marriage or divorce certificate or a court order. The document must show your previous name as well as your new name.

2. Gather together your current driver's license as well as an updated Social Security card. You can obtain a new Social Security card by contacting your local Social Security Office. See the "Resources" section below for a directory.

3. Go to your local Secretary of State's office, Department of Motor Vehicles, or Driver and Vehicle Service location. Depending on the state you live in, this can be a different location. See "References" below for a directory of locations.

4. Present your information to obtain a new Driver's License. You may be assessed a fee after which you will be issued a duplicate license with your new name. Your previous driver's license will not be returned.
