Make Instant Hand Sanitizer

Making hand sanitizer can be a simple, low-cost DIY project.

To curb the spread of germs, especially during flu season, instant hand sanitizer can be found everywhere: waiting rooms, restrooms, classrooms and on many workplace desks. With risks of new flu chains and other serious illnesses, instant hand sanitizer became almost a staple. Though hand sanitizer is not expensive to purchase in stores, many enjoy making it themselves.

Sanitizer Recipes

1. Achieve results close to that of brand name instant hand sanitizers like Purell or Germ-X by mixing together one part of aloe gel to 2 parts of isopropyl alcohol (91%). An article in the "Emerging Infectious Diseases" journal states it is necessary that the minimum alcohol concentration exceed sixty percent. Pour into empty recycled plastic bottles.

2. Mix together 4 ounces of aloe vera gel with 20 drops of essential oils, such as tea tree, peppermint, lavender and nightingale for a variation on instant hand sanitizer. The addition of essential oils helps the sanitizer to not be so drying. Pour the solution into empty recycled plastic bottles.

3. Choose to make an all natural form of instant hand sanitizer with a few more ingredients. Mix 4 ounces of aloe vera gel with slightly less than a quarter cup of witch hazel. Add in 2 tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar, 40 drops of grapefruit seed extract and 20 drops of tea tree oil. Combine all ingredients thoroughly and pour into recycled plastic bottles.
