Ward Off Bugs Naturally

Learn repel insects naturally by using household items like plants and essential oils. Since chemicals found in most bug repellent sprays contain ingredients that harm the enviroment and your health, finding altnerative solutions to warding off bugs is becoming necessary to protect both your family's health and the health of the planet.

Instructions

1. One pesky annoyance that can ruin any outdoor barbeque is being swarmed by a hungry field of bugs--mosquitoes, bees or other flying and biting creatures. Rather than relying on harsh bug repellent sprays that contain chemicals and toxins that can irritate your skin and respiratory tract, there a number of plants you can plant in your garden or strategically place around your outdoor patio that will keep the flies and insects away without harming your health and home environment. Two such plants are citronella and calendula. Even though you love the sweet smells of these natural plants, for bugs, smelling citronella and calendula is akin to being next to a pile of garbage. Place a few pots of these outside and watch the bugs buzz off.

2. You can also repel biting bugs by planting herbs. Mint, garlic, chives, lemongrass and rosemary are great for warding off mosquitoes and ants. Not only can you dine outdoors in peace but your barbeque fare of grilled chicken, roasted potatoes and salads get an extra flavor punch from all of these fabulous herbs you can add to them. The ants may not like you but you're sure to receive rave reviews from your guests as they nosh on all of your herb-alicious dishes without getting bit by any biting creatures.

3. You can also repel bugs naturally by making your own bug-repellent spray. All you need is a spray bottle, witch hazel and essential oils and you're good to go. Most bug sprays contain harmful chemicals. They may help to keep the bugs at bay, but their powerful ingredients can irritate your breathing. In a small spray bottle, combine 4 to 5 ounces of witch hazel with 4 to 5 drops of citronella, eucalyptus and lavender essential oils. Shake well and spritz on your skin.

4. Planting flowers around your garden can also help to keep insects away. Marigolds are one such flower that are easy to take care of and they emit a peppery smell that most insects find repulsive. Marigolds are wonderful flowers because they come in a variety of colors and as long as your remove the dead flower top, another bloom will quickly follow in its place. When you're at the nursery, look for edible marigolds as well and add them to your next salad for an eye-catching and yummy summer dish.

5. Take the leaves or petals from any of the insect-repelling plants, crush them and add them to 2 ounces of vodka or vegetable oil. Allow for the liquid to absorb the scent of the crushed leaves and apply as you would a regular bug spray. Even thought these natural remedies may take a bit more time to create, they are far more gentle to you, your family and the environment.
