Tinctures are liquids made with alcohol in which various herbs are steeped. The tincture is then used for various medicinal applications. Tinctures made in your own kitchen are not as potent as those manufactured commercially; however, you can still take advantage of the healing properties of herbs by making your own tincture.
Instructions
1. Choose the herbs you wish to use. Consider making a tincture with echinacea to use at the first signs of a cold or flu. A valerian tincture is good for promoting sleep.
2. Add the herbs to three-fourths cup of vodka in a large glass jar. Make sure that your herbs are completely covered and submerged. Seal the jar tightly and place in a warm, dark place for 10 to 14 days. Shake the mixture once or twice a day.
3. Strain the herbs through a fine piece of muslin, removing as much of the liquid from the herbs as possible.
4. Pour the tincture liquid into a dark glass bottle. Seal and label; be sure to include the date. The tincture can be stored in the refrigerator up to 12 months.
