Does The Vitamin Lysine Help In Hair Growth

Does the Vitamin Lysine Help in Hair Growth?

Having healthy hair and enjoying maximum growth rate require nutrients like vitamins A, C and E, minerals and amino acids. Nutrition plays a big role in promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss.

L-lysine

Lysine, or L-lysine, is an essential amino acid that cannot be produced by the body. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and necessary for human health. Since the body does not produce them, they need to be obtained through food and/or supplements.

Function

Lysine helps restore arginine to its normal levels, which in turn supports the maintenance of hair growth, lip tissue and gums. It helps produce carnitine, which converts fatty acids into usable energy, helping to prevent cholesterol buildup.

Hair Loss

In regard to hair loss, especially genetic hair loss, lysine has been proven to help stop the loss of hair if taken daily in doses ranging from 200 mg to 2,000 mg in 500 mg doses. In combination with other hair loss products like minoxidil and anti-androgens, lysine has improved the results.

Dosage

To support hair growth, the normal daily dosage should be 500 mg to 1000 mg, recommends the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Sources

You can obtain L-lysine through the foods such as red meat, poultry, pork, vegetables, legumes, soybeans, eggs, nuts, parmesan cheese, and various types of fish like tuna, cod and sardines. It is also available in supplement form.

Warning

Not all hair loss is caused by lack of nutrients, so if you decide to take L-lysine as part of your hair growth program, check with your doctor first to see if there is another underlying cause.
