Clogged Ears

About Clogged Ears

Clogged ears may be caused by an infection, a buildup of earwax, jaw tension, allergies or sinus pressure. If your clogged ears are caused by a wax buildup, there are several at-home ways of removing wax, as well as instruments a doctor can use to help. If your clogged ears are caused by an infection, your ears may have to be drained with a doctor's help, or you may be prescribed medication to drain your ear infection. Consult a doctor if your clogged ears are causing you any pain. There are many at-home remedies on the market for wax buildup, including candling and hydrogen peroxide.

Identification

Before using any at-home methods, make sure whether you know if you are dealing with an infection, allergies, stress or wax buildup. The most common and easiest to fix is wax buildup, and it is not necessary to see a doctor if you are suffering from it. Allergies and infections often create a fluid buildup in the ear, which is what creates the clogged feeling. If you're not sure what is causing your clogged ears, see a doctor to be sure.

Types

Removing wax buildup can be done at home or by a doctor. Home wax-removal kits are available at your local drugstore, as well as saline ear cleaners and plastic plungers designed to shoot the saline into your ears. Ear candling is also a consideration, where a candle is lit in the ear to create a suction to remove excess wax. On the other hand, it is not proven that ear candles work, and they are not approved by the FDA.

Considerations

If your ears are clogged due to a fluid buildup, see your doctor. Your doctor will look inside your ears and drain them if necessary. She will prescribe a medication to reduce pressure in your ears and relieve swelling. You may have to go back for several draining sessions if your ear infection is severe. Ear draining is painful, but it is necessary to see your doctor if you have an ear infection, so she can deem what is necessary for your recovery.

Prevention/Solution

To prevent ear infections and wax buildup, do not stick any foreign objects in your ears. Rinse your ears with hydrogen peroxide by pouring one part hydrogen peroxide and one part water into a small cup. Mix thoroughly, then pour the mixture into your ears. Hold your head to the side for 30 seconds before pouring the peroxide out of your ear and into the sink. Repeat once daily. Do not use cotton swabs deep inside your ear--they will cause wax buildup near the eardrum. If you must use cotton swabs, gently clean the outside of your ear only.

Warning

If you are experiencing ear pain, see a doctor immediately. Even if you think your ear pain is being caused by wax buildup, it is imperative that you see a doctor if you are in any pain. Your doctor can prescribe antibiotics or ear drops to lessen the swelling and clear the ear of any infection. Do not put cold liquid in your ear. Heat ear drops or other liquids up with your hands before putting them into your ears to reduce dizziness and fainting.
