Amisulpride is a drug used to control the symptoms of schizophrenia. Administered in pill and liquid form, amisulpride provides relief to some but its use is accompanied by certain risks and side effects.
Usage and Dosing
Amisulpride is a serious oral medication used to treat a mental disorder. It has been shown to alleviate the symptoms caused by chronic schizophrenia, such as delusions, hallucinations, thought disorders, and social or emotional withdrawal. The brand name for amisulpride is Solian, but generic forms are also available. Dosages range from 100mg to 400mg in pill form and 100mg/mL in liquid form.
Mechanism of Function
Amisulpride works to balance out the relationship between the brain chemicals dopamine and noradrenaline and their receptors. Once stabilized, a patient experiences general relief of schizophrenic symptoms.
Who Shouldn't Take Amisulpride?
There are instances in which a patient should not take amisulpride without extreme medical supervision. Any patient who is sensitive or allergic to any component of the medication, those with certain tumors or cancers, pregnant or lactating women, prepubescent children, and those taking certain other medicines must weigh the risks with the benefits of amisulpride with their physician. He or she will be able to assist the patient in deciding if amisulpride use will benefit them in the presence of these conditions.
Since amisulpride is a strong antipsychotic medication that has many contraindications, a complete physical workup must be completed before starting the drug, and intermittently thereafter. In all cases, a physician must closely supervise any patient taking amisulpride for the duration of time that they take it.
Side Effects
As with any drug, amisulpride use comes with risks and side effects that include insomnia, anxiety, extrapyramidal disorder (a condition that impairs muscle movement within the body), weight gain and the absence of menses in females. If while taking amisulpride you experience stiff muscles, a fever or body twitches, discontinue use of the drug and consult your physician immediately.
Patients with Seizure Disorders
Amisulpride can lower the seizure threshold in patients, and the risk of seizure increases with larger doses. Patients with a history of seizure disorders such as epilepsy must be carefully monitored while taking amisulpride. Consult with your doctor about the risks of increased seizure occurrence while taking amilsulpride if you have epilepsy or a history of any seizure disorder. Your doctor can help you decide if the benefits of the drug outweigh the risks in your individual circumstance.
Liver Failure
If yellowing of the eyes or skin should occur, consult your doctor immediately. This condition, which is known as jaundice, signifies a failure of the liver, which is critical in removing amisulpride from the body as well as other critical detoxifying functions.
