Foods That Prevent Heart Disease

Foods that prevent heart disease include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. Fruits and vegetables in particular are rich in antioxidants, which are very beneficial for cardiovascular health. In general, people should eat less fat, less sodium and fewer fried foods. Alcohol in moderation is acceptable and may even help prevent heart disease.


Fruits and Vegetables


All fresh fruit is good for cardiovascular health. The best vegetables include sweet potatoes, onions, green leafy vegetables, carrots, broccoli, pumpkin and squash.








Meat


Lean chicken and turkey without the skin are the best meats for preventing heart disease.


Fish


Fish with high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, a type of polyunsaturated fat, can decrease the risk of heart disease and also can lower blood pressure. Omega-3 fatty acids are most abundant in salmon, mackerel, sardines and herring. Smaller amounts are found in canola oil, flaxseed oil, soybean oil and walnut oil.


Monounsaturated Fats


Monounsaturated fats are much better for heart health than trans-fatty acids or partially hydrogenated fats. The best oil for preventing heart disease is olive oil.


Whole Grain Foods


Whole grain foods, such as oat bran and whole wheat, can also help prevent heart disease.


Dark Chocolate


Great news for chocolate lovers comes from research reported by WebMD in 2008: Eating a small amount of dark chocolate each day can decrease inflammation associated with heart disease.
