Compound An Ointment

Compound ointments to make your own skin treatments.

Ointment compounds are skin treatments made by adding essential oils and other ingredients to an oily or waxy base. Ointment compounds are used for skin softening or treatment of skin conditions. Common base materials are beeswax, cocoa butter, shea butter and coconut oil. Vitamin E oil, an antioxidant, is often added to ointment compounds to preserve freshness. Other ingredients, such as essential oils and herbs, are added, as desired, to create an ointment for a specific purpose. A variety of ointment compound recipes is available on the Internet.

Instructions

1. Decide upon an ointment compound recipe.

2. Measure base media or medium on scale and place in stainless steel or enamel container.

3. Prepare remaining ingredients so they will be ready to add to the compound when the base ingredients reach the proper consistency.

4. Melt base media using a hot water bath. A stainless steel double boiler will work for this purpose. If you do not have a double boiler, your stainless steel or enamel container can be placed in a vessel of hot water.

5. Stir base media until it has completely dissolved, and remove from hot water bath.

6. Stir base media until it begins to thicken. Use spoon, or a rotary or electric mixer.

7. Add essential oils and other ingredients to your ointment compound.

Add remaining ingredients, stirring constantly to blend thoroughly.

8. Place finished ointment compound in glass jar and cover tightly.
