Types Of Natural Progesterone

Progesterone is significant in the hormone processes of both males and females. Its main function in the human body is to regulate hormone systems; without it, other hormones become imbalanced, resulting in health issues. Natural progesterone is made by the body, but is also produced in laboratories.

Significance

Progesterone maintains estrogen balance in women, and is primarily connected with fertility and pregnancy. In men, progesterone keeps testosterone and estrogen properly balanced.

Types

Progesterone is produced in the body from cholesterol. Oral progesterone in pill form and transdermal creams that are absorbed into the skin are derived from plants and soy---these types of progesterone are created in laboratories, but are considered to be natural forms of the hormone.

Phytoestrogens are in seeds, herbs, beans, fruits and whole grains, and have progesterone-like properties. The Chinese herb dong quai and the squaw vine herb used by Native Americans are popular examples of phytoestrogens. Herbal supplements, however, must be taken under a doctor's guidance to avoid negative effects.

Effects

The effects of low progesterone are unhealthy for both males and females. Loss of progesterone leads to female infertility and higher estrogen levels, which is considered a breast cancer risk. It also increases stressors that impact mood, alter clarity and induce depression in women. In men, progesterone loss raises testosterone levels that lead to prostrate problems, and increases levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is linked to hair loss and severe prostate illness.

Benefits

Progesterone is a natural anti-depressant and mood enhancer. It also modulates and restores hormone balance, improves libido and helps prevent breast cancer.

Warning

Natural progesterone is preferred for use as treatment. Prometrium, a scientifically produced natural progesterone, is available in pill form by prescription. The synthetic progesterone Provera (medroxyprogesterone), however, has been linked to cancers.
