Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptoms & Causes

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a digestive disorder that results in chronic abdominal discomfort and pain. According to the Mayo Clinic, nearly 20 percent of American adults have irritable bowel symptoms. The symptoms and causes of irritable bowel may be treated with medications and behavioral changes such as diet modification and stress management.


Abdominal Pain


Abdominal pain and cramps are symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome that may be severe and limit a person's ability to perform daily activities.


Impaired Bowel Functions


Severe diarrhea that alternates with constipation is a symptom of irritable bowel syndrome and may not respond well to typical home remedies and medical treatments.


Gas


Gas (flatulence) and abdominal bloating are symptoms of irritable bowel that may be uncomfortable and embarrassing.


Food triggers


According to the Mayo Clinic, certain types of foods such as dairy, caffeinated beverages and alcohol may trigger or cause irritable bowel syndrome.


Stress


Stressful life events or unusual daily stress due to work, family or finances may aggravate the symptoms of irritable bowel.


Infections


Irritable bowel may be caused by illnesses and infections of the digestive system such as gastroenteritis or food poisoning.








Hormones


Hormonal fluctuations in women may cause or worsen the symptoms of irritable bowel, especially in the few days before menstruation.
