MSM can be hard on the intestinal tract and also should be avoided by pregnant women.
Methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM, is a dietary supplement that is basically an organic form of sulfur, a mineral that the body needs and that typically cannot be obtained in large enough quantities through diet. MSM is touted as having a wide array of beneficial effects on the body, including improving joint, tendon and ligament health, removing free radicals and toxins from the body by improving cell wall permeability, increasing the strength of hair follicles and fingernails, and improving skin tone. However, there are some risks associated with taking MSM that should be carefully considered.
Headaches, Gastrointestinal Irritation and Skin Rashes
The most common risks of MSM are headaches, gastrointestinal irritation and skin rashes. These may come about if you are allergic to MSM or if your body cannot process the dosage you are taking. The Mayo Clinic also states that diarrhea and nausea can result from use of MSM. However, the side effects are generally temporary and for the most part mild in most people. If you notice these side effects, stop using the product immediately and consult a doctor or nutritionist before resuming its use.
Processing of MSM
MSM is generally processed separately from dangerous chemicals. However, it could have been processed alongside such toxins as benzene or pesticides, and it is possible that these chemicals could have come into contact with the MSM. Knowing that you have purchased your MSM from a reputable source is important, because quality control in some areas is not as strict as it would be at a major reputable manufacturer.
Pregnancy and MSM
If you are pregnant, think you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, you should not use or come in contact with MSM. There have not been enough proven studies yet regarding the effect of MSM on developing fetuses, so it should be assumed that the product is potentially harmful and should be avoided during any stage of pregnancy.
