There are quite a few methods for treating systemic candida (yeast). Getting rid of the condition and preventing its return may require some long-term dietary changes which could take several months or longer depending upon the severity of the yeast overgrowth. If the diet is used for treatment, individuals can gradually return to a normal diet with some dietary changes once the condition has cleared up.
Dietary Suggestions for Candidia
Candida (yeast) thrives and survives on sugars, therefore sugars and sugar-producing carbohydrates must be eliminated from the diet. Limited amounts of sugar, that come from natural sources such as fruits, are allowed. Vitamin supplements like B-complex and selenium should be labeled "yeast free" if they are taken during the diet. All forms of alcohol, including beer and wine must be eliminated. Foods containing white vinegar, like mustard, salad dressings, barbeque sauces, pickles, and mayonnaise must not be consumed. And of course carbohydrates like those found in pretzels, pastries, breads, and rolls must be eliminated. In addition, mold-containing foods like cheese and foods that support mold growth should be avoided. Foods that contain and promote mold growth include: cured pork bacon, mushrooms, pickled fish and meats, soy sauce, malt and foods that contain malt as well as canned tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes can be consumed while on the diet. Eliminate ALL processed sugars including bottled, canned, and frozen fruit juices, dried fruits, honey, brown sugar, maple syrup and anything that contains high-fructose corn syrup.
Foods that are acceptable on a candida eliminating diet include: All fresh vegetables, proteins found in all types of meats, eggs, and shell fish. It is important to include at least one of these proteins in every meal. Complex carbohydrates are acceptable, like those found in barley, buckwheat, rice and couscous, whole grain oats, and beans, but should be limited to 15 grams per meal. With the exception of peanuts, other unprocessed nuts and seeds are fine to eat. Fresh fruits are acceptable, but grapes, prunes, raisins, dates, and figs should be avoided. Individuals who are attempting to cleanse themselves of systemic candida should avoid all processed foods.
Taking Supplements can Help
Lactobacillus and bifidobacteria, which help to regulate the bacteria in the digestive tract, are very effective in the fight against candida overgrowth. These substances can be found in milk and yogurt products as well as in pill form.
Essential fatty acids help to strengthen the body's immune system and can be found in flaxseed, fish oil, and borage seed oil capsules. Adding supplements that promote healing such as magnesium, calcium, and iron supplements can also prove to be beneficial in the fight against opportunistic candida overgrowth.
Vaginal Candida
Vaginal yeast infections are quite common and can lead to systemic infections if left untreated. Yogurt can kill vaginal yeast infections naturally. One simple treatment is to coat a tampon in plain yogurt, that does not contain flavors or sugar, and insert it into the vagina morning and night for about 20 minutes. This should be repeated daily until the condition is completely cleared up. Yogurt can also be rubbed on the vagina to provide relief from the itching and burning sensation that accompanies this type of infection.
It is better to prevent the yeast infection than trying to get rid of it. Lose-fitting clothing should be worn and underwear that is made of cotton help in allowing oxygen to circulate in the vaginal area. Underwear with a cotton crotch can be used as well. Keeping the vagina dry and clean will help prevent yeast overgrowth. As mentioned earlier, applying yogurt to the affected area is great for curing the problem once it has surfaced, eating yogurt or taking acidophilous and/or bifidous supplements will help maintain healthy levels of good bacteria and thus minimize the possibility of a systemic infection.
