New Jersey Medicaid Eligibility Rules

New Jersey Medicaid provides healthcare to those who qualify.

Medicaid is a state and federal program that offers health insurance coverage to those who qualify. Persons might be able to receive free or low-cost medical coverage through Medicaid, depending upon financial resources, income and other criteria. Eligibility rules vary by state. To receive Medicaid benefits in New Jersey, applicants must meet specific New Jersey Medicaid eligibility requirements.

Basic New Jersey Medicaid Qualifications

An applicant must be a New Jersey resident and a United States citizen or qualified alien (permanent resident). An applicant also needs to provide evidence that his financial resources and income are within New Jersey Medicaid eligibility rules. He must also fall under one of the following categories: pregnant, aged, blind, disabled or low-income family with children.

Pregnant Women

A pregnant woman can receive New Jersey Medicaid benefits if her family income does not exceed 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Limit (FPL). Medicaid benefits cover health care costs before, during and 60 days after the child is born. As an example, for a pregnant woman to qualify for NJ Medicaid, she must have a monthly income that equals $2,429 or less. The child will automatically receive Medicaid benefits for one year, regardless of any change in income.

Aged, Blind and Disabled Persons

Applicants considered disabled or blind or are 65 years of age or older may receive New Jersey Medicaid benefits. Applicants also have to fulfill other eligibility rules regarding financial requirements. For example, a one-person household monthly income must not exceed $903, and maximum financial resources cannot exceed $4,000.

Low-Income Families with Children Age 18 and Under

A child who is 18 years of age or under can receive New Jersey Medicaid benefits if his family's income does not exceed 350 percent of the FPL. For instance, a family of four must have a monthly income of $6,432 or less to qualify for NJ Medicaid. The child's parents may also receive Medicaid if their monthly income is for a family of four, totaling $3,675 or less or below 200 percent of the FPL.
