Due to its soft, woodsy scent and moisturizing qualities, Avon's Skin So Soft bath oil has been a favorite for generations. Skin So Soft has been known to help humans and animals alike; its reputation as a flea and tick repellent has been embraced by many pet owners. Consider trying this Avon staple before dousing your furry friend in potentially harmful chemicals and insecticides.
Flea Bath
Adding Skin So Soft oil to your dog's bath water will not only help a flea-ridden dog find some relief, but it can also prevent flea infestations in unaffected canines. Shampoo your dog as you normally would. Once all the suds have been rinsed out, add a small amount of Skin So Soft to your pet's rinse water -- about 1/4 cup, depending on the size of the dog. Work the oil directly onto the dog's skin to help moisturize their skin and prevent flea attacks. This method is also helpful when your dog is suffering from dry, flaky skin or hot spots. Be very gentle while applying any substance to your dog's hot spots.
Flea Spray
For flea control between baths, fill a 16oz. spray bottle with distilled water and two tablespoons of Skin So Soft. Shake the bottle before each use and spray your dog's coat down as much as needed to control your flea problem. Brushing your dog's coat after spraying helps get the mixture down onto the affected skin. While this method may offer effective flea and tick control, repeated use will make your dog's coat oily. You may need to bathe your dog more often to get rid of excess oil and the dust, dander and pollen it attracts. If your dog has allergies, this may not be a good option. Oily fur can quickly become dirty fur, and may exacerbate any allergies that your dog may have.
Flea Collar
When flea dips and daily sprays just don't seem to do the trick, try a homemade flea collar. This method works with store-bought fabric collars or any natural material, such as cotton, flannel or fleece, that can be fashioned into a dog collar. Soak your collar of choice in a mixture of one part Skin So Soft to four parts apple cider vinegar for 30 minutes. Let the collar dry for at least a day before using it. Make sure that the collar is fitted properly and does not present a choking hazard.
Household Flea Control
Flea control is not just about treating the animal; fleas can overrun any area in the home. Thoroughly clean with hot, soapy water any area that your dog inhabits. Lightly spray each area with your Skin So Soft mixture to deter any fleas that may infest the area. Bedding and outdoor housing are especially susceptible to flea infestations.
