If you come across a bottle full of prescription drugs, your first inclination may be to simply toss the entire bottle into the garbage. Doing so can be dangerous, though, as somebody may steal and ingest the drugs. Remove the drugs from your home to ensure that you or somebody else in your home does not accidentally ingest the expired drugs. The proper method for disposing of prescription drugs is very simple and will take you only a few minutes.
Instructions
1. Remove the prescription drugs from the original container. Remove the label from the prescription bottle before you throw the bottle out. This label has your personal information on it and should be cut up or shredded.
2. Break the pills up into smaller pieces. This can be done with a hammer. If the prescription drugs are gel caps, they can be cut with a pair of scissors.
3. Mix the pills with another substance that you will throw away. Cat litter, used coffee grinds or even dirt from an old plant are examples.
4. Place the mixture into a smaller container or a small plastic bag.
5. Put the container in your trash can or a dumpster.
