Put On House Shingles

When you are roofing a house, you have two options: you can either use shingles or you can use roofing metal. The shingles aren't quite as durable as the roofing metal, and you periodically have to replace them, but they are prettier to look at then the roofing metal, and they are also considerably cheaper.

Instructions

1. Cover your entire roof with the tar paper. This is easiest if you have at least one other person to help you. You want to unroll the tar paper in such a way that the edges overlap. Use your galvanized nails to hold the strips of tar paper in place. When you are laying tar paper, you want to start at the bottom of the roof's pitch and work your way up.

2. Use the flashing strips to cover all of your roofs joints and ridges. Make sure that you fold the flashing lengthwise.

3. Start at the bottom of your roof, and line the edges of the shingles up to the bottom edge of your roof. You will use roofing nails to fasten the shingle in place. Make sure that your nails are above the shingles seam.

4. Continue working your way up the roof. Make sure that you take a few seconds after you complete each row of shingles, and make sure that you are making a straight line.

5. When you reach the top of the roof you will have to use an asphalt ridge cap to complete the shingling process. You can purchase an asphalt ridge cap at a home improvement or hardware store.
