Some hip pain benefits from spinal decompression.
Spinal decompression may help hip pain. But first, you must know the actual cause of the pain. Hip pain due to spinal disc issues is a good candidate for spinal decompression, according to Chiropractor Dr. Rob Gottesman. Yet, hip pain from injury or disease may not be.
Disc Issues
Hip pain might be related to lower back disc issues or degeneration that refers pain to the hip area, according to Gottesman. In this case, spinal decompression can be an effective way to remove pressure from the discs, relive pain and allow proper nerve function.
Tight Muscles
Often tight back, thigh and hip flexor muscles can lead to hip pain. Even weak thigh muscles can cause problems with stabilizing the hip, causing pain, according to the book "Anybody's Sports Medicine." For tight muscles, spinal decompression can help. For weak muscles, you will need to exercise to strengthen muscles, too.
Injury and Disease
An injury from a fall or car accident can cause hip pain. So can underlying diseases like Perthes disease. Pain from injuries and some disease should not be addressed with spinal decompression, said Gottesman. The authors of "Anybody's Sports Medicine" advise seeking medical attention if pain travels down the leg, comes with tingling or the hip "gives out" on you.
Spinal Decompression
Spinal decompression is a non-invasive process to realign the spine and add space back in the vertebral column. By adding space between the vertebrae, compressed nerves can be released, tight muscles can relax and more healing can happen.
Decompression and Hip Pain
Hip pain related to degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, osteoarthritis or muscle spasm may be relieved by spinal decompression, according to Gottesman. If the hip pain is from trauma or an injury, other treatment may be required. Getting a proper diagnosis of your hip pain is key before deciding on appropriate treatment, Gottesman said.
