Chinese Herbs For Occipital & Frontal Headaches

Headaches plague many individuals on a daily basis. Location, duration and causes vary, as do the treatments. Chinese Medical Practitioners consider headaches to be rooted in having an excess or deficiency of qi and blood in the head.

Diagnosis

Chinese practitioners look at different factors to determine the best treatment for headaches. The practitioner looks at the location of the pain, specific symptoms and patterns then treats based on these patterns. They look at your general physical state, location of pain, appearance of the tongue and the palpation of the pulse. The patterns they are looking for can be caused by environmental factors or imbalances of the body.

Occipital Lobe Headaches

Emotional trauma such as anger, tension and frustration can cause occipital lobe headaches. Toxicity, such as liver agitation from alcohol or drugs, can also cause this headache in the back of the head. Both are considered a liver/gallbladder headache.

Frontal Lobe Headaches

Frontal lobe headaches can be caused from food stagnation, overindulgence, eating too late in the day or from a hangover. These are considered liver and stomach excess headaches.

Occipital Lobe and Frontal Lobe Headaches

Occipital lobe and frontal lobe headaches can also be more of a sinus headache. These headaches are due to damp accumulation which produces swollen tissues and are considered damp heat/sinus infection headaches.

Chinese Herbs

Frontal lobe headaches caused by overindulgence should use the Yu Nu Jian formula. This includes Shi Gao, Shu Di Huang, Zhi Mu, Mai, Men Dong and Huai Niu Xi herbs. Use a decoction of 35-60 grams until 40 cl remains. You should take this decoction three to four times daily.

Frontal and Occipital Lobe Headaches due to sinus irritation can use the Cang Er Zi San formula. This contains Cang Er Zi, Xin Yi, Bai Zhi, and Bo He herbs. Grind the ingredients into a powder. Add two grams to tea made from Cong Bai and green tea and drink three times daily. The Ge Gen Tang formula can also be used for Occipital Lobe Headaches.
