Choose Health Insurance For Pregnancy

It's estimated that nearly 41 million Americans are without health insurance. Sadly, this means paying out-of-pocket for doctor visits and medical procedures. If you plan to start a family, it's vital to have adequate health insurance. Between routine examinations and the actual delivery cost, having a baby can cost between $8,000 and $10,000. Thus, it's important for every woman to have health insurance.

Instructions

1. Compare health insurance rates. Health insurance is expensive. Still, it's a necessity. A single injury or major medical problem can cost thousands of dollars. There are several health insurance providers. Rather than pick a random company and plan, take time to research different companies and request online rate quotes.

2. Ask your employer about health care. Often times, employers are prepared to pay your health insurance premiums, or at least a percentage. If you want to start a family, discuss coverage options with your employer, or look for employment that offers adequate health benefits.

3. Select a maternity rider. Unfortunately, having health insurance isn't enough. You need a health insurance plan that features a maternity rider. This increases your monthly premiums. However, this additional rider covers prenatal visits, delivery and post-natal care.

4. Look into COBRA health insurance. If you're planning to have a baby, it's best to stay with your current employer until the baby is born. However, if you have to switch jobs, you may qualify for COBRA, which provides health insurance to persons who are between plans.

5. Apply for government-funded health insurance. Government or Federal programs such as Medicaid provide health insurance and other medical assistance to low-income individuals.

6. Pay for pregnancy with a medical discount plan. If you become pregnant without health insurance or a maternity rider, a medical discount plan can cover some of the expenses. Discount plans such as Maternity Advantage (see Resources) can save you up to 60 percent on doctor visits and delivery, and there isn't a waiting period.
