Foods To Avoid With Ibs

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder that can be very difficult to live with. But you can minimize its effects with some preparation and planning and by knowing your triggers. Living with IBS is all about arming yourself with knowledge and managing the disorder. Knowing what foods you should and should not eat is the perfect place to start.

Processed Foods

Avoid overly processed foods, especially if you suffer IBS with constipation. Steer clear of processed packaged foods such as cookies, chips, cereals and bread. If you have IBS with diarrhea, also avoid processed foods with artificial sweeteners.

Fatty Foods and Dairy

For those suffering IBS with diarrhea, it is a good idea to avoid overly fatty and fried foods. The fat reacts poorly in the digestive system of an IBS sufferer. For this reason, it's also advised to avoid dairy products. In fact, some people who have IBS mistakenly believe their problem is lactose intolerance because of dairy's effects. If you have IBS with constipation, a high-protein diet can aggravate constipation.

High-Fiber Foods

Foods high in fiber can aggravate IBS and cause severe symptoms for those with IBS with diarrhea. Avoid foods with high levels of wheat, as well as raw fruits and vegetables, especially the skins. Know the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber, and avoid insoluble fiber. Good sources of soluble fiber include oats, barley, rice, pasta and dried fruit. Taking a fiber supplement can help you get the fiber you need.

Diuretics

For both IBS with constipation and IBS with diarrhea, it's best to avoid diuretics. In particular, this means carbonated beverages, caffeine and alcohol. Be sure to stay properly hydrated with water and juice.

Gas Inducers

Stay away from foods that are notorious for causing gas, as excess gas can further irritate the digestive tract. Go easy on foods such as celery, broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, beans and onions.
