Natural Osteoarthritis Pain Relief

Osteoarthritis can cause mild to intense pain in any of your joints, and can decrease your ability to do normal activities such as housecleaning and walking. Although there are many over-the-counter and prescription medications for arthritis, natural remedies may be just as effective at managing pain.

Heat

Heating a rice bag or warming a damp cloth and applying it to joints affected by osteoarthritis--such as your knee or elbow--can reduce stiffness and increase range of motion in the joints.

Cold

Alternatively to heat, cold compresses or ice bags can reduce inflammation and swelling in your joints that cause pain and muscle cramps.

Soaking

You may be able to reduce pain and swelling from osteoarthritis by soaking in a warm bath and adding Epsom salts to help relax your muscles.

Oils

Using olive oil, tea tree oil or aloe vera extract as an ointment or a lubricant for a massage can help to relax your joints and reduce stiffness.

Posture

Holding your body in good posture by standing straight, using proper lifting and bending techniques, and taking care not to move suddenly can reduce wear and inflammation caused by osteoarthritis.

Supplements

Dietary supplements such as ginger, glucosamine and chondroitin may reduce inflammation and swelling of your joints, although interactions with medications such as blood thinners are possible.
