Cope With Leaking Milk

Your breast starts making milk shortly after labor. Your breasts may leak milk in the first month after childbirth. This is a fairly common problem. When breastfeeding becomes regular, milk leaking will become less of an issue. Try the different methods below to cope with leaking milk.

Instructions

1. Use nursing pads. Nursing pads are available as disposables or washable cotton pads. Have your nursing pads nearby and change the wet pads frequently to keep your nipple dry to reduce the risk of infection. Do not use plastic or waterproof liners because they can't absorb very well and may irritate you.

2. Avoid using a breast pump. Breast pumping stimulates your breast to produce more milk and worsens the leaking.

3. Apply pressure to your breasts. Use the palms of your hands to press against your nipples. This will help to stop milk leaking temporarily.

4. Milk leaking often occurs at night. Put a towel on the bed to prevent wetting the bed.

5. Use milk cups to cover your nipples. Use your nursing bra to hold the milk cups in place.
