Most people experience a little acid reflux, or heartburn, once in awhile. Some, however, are afflicted with this painful problem on a frequent basis. When heartburn occurs often, doctors consider it a disorder called acid reflux disease, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. Researchers don't know why some people get the disorder and some do not. Certain factors are known to cause or worsen acid reflux disease.
Structural Problem
In some people, the sphincter between the esophagus and stomach becomes weak, allowing stomach acid and enzymes to travel up into the throat. These digestive juices can damage the esophagus over time, making the acid reflux even worse.
Diet
Traditionally, doctors advised heartburn sufferers to avoid many foods, but a 2006 review by Stanford University of 100 published studies found no benefit for any particular diet in regard to improving acid reflux. Individuals may find that certain foods cause frequent acid reflux in their own situations, and should avoid those foods.
Smoking and Alcohol
Some people who smoke tobacco and some who drink alcohol find those activities aggravate acid reflux.
Sleeping Habits
Sleeping in a prone position can cause acid reflux. People can try arranging pillows so the upper body is at a 15-degree angle; in addition, not eating within 3 hours before sleep can help.
Obesity and Pregnancy
Anything that puts pressure on the abdomen can cause frequent acid reflux, including pregnancy or being significantly overweight.
