Description Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a very common disorder that affects one out of five adults in the U.S. The condition occurs when the muscles lining the walls of the intestines contract or relax abnormally. When this occurs, food does not pass through the intestines according to the body's natural rhythm. Food may then pass either too quickly or too slowly, causing the uncomfortable symptoms associated with IBS.

Symptoms

People who suffer from IBS may experience diarrhea and/or constipation, abdominal pain, bloating and gas. Symptoms may also vary from mild to severe and may come and go over time.

Origin

The precise cause of IBS is unknown. Researchers speculate that it may result from disruptions in the central nervous system. Hormones levels, certain foods and stress may also trigger IBS symptoms.

Detection

Doctors diagnosis IBS based on the Rome criteria. It states that patients must have abdominal pain for 12 weeks or more, changes in stool frequency or consistency, straining or mucus in the stool.

Prevention/Solution

Unfortunately, there is no cure for IBS. However, along with diet adjustments and stress reduction, prescription medications such as amitiza, Lotronex and antidepressants, may be used to help control symptoms.

Warning

In addition to the main symptoms of IBS, additional symptoms such as weight loss, vomiting and fever may indicate the presence of a complication or other underlying condition.
