Topical Treatments
Over-the-counter medications such as Orabase, Ambesol and Orajel can alleviate canker sore pain. These medications can also help the canker sores to heal more quickly.
Pain Medications
Over-the-counter pain medications may be used to help ease canker sore pain. Medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen are recommended.
Homemade Mouth Rinses
The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) recommends rinsing the mouth with equal parts of liquid Benadryl and Milk of Magnesia every few hours. The solution should not be swallowed.
Prescription Mouth Rinses
If the canker sore persists or is extremely painful, a doctor may prescribe a steroid mouth rinse containing dexamethasone. This mouth rinse will help to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.
Other Treatments
The AAFP also suggests that taking either vitamin B complex or vitamin C may be helpful. In addition, sucking on zinc lozenges or rinsing with an herbal solution containing chamomile and sage may soothe the canker sore.
