Government Regulations For Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors, found in most businesses and homes in America, are governed by certain rules and stipulations, especially in places of commerce and public buildings. Although there are regulations, the maintenance of smoke detectors is relatively easy.


Placement








The smoke detectors in a building are placed in accordance with the building's layout and field tests to determine the most effective location for alarm systems. Any new building must find the most appropriate layout to promote safety.








Types


The smoke detector and fire alarms system must not only sound; for deaf or otherwise impaired employees, alarm warnings other than audio must be used to warn individuals.


Regular Testing


The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) requires visual testing of a smoke detectors and fire alarms every week, ensuring the detector has not been destroyed or tampered with. Every quarter, the unit should be more thoroughly inspected.


Annual Testing


On an annual basis, the NFPA requires a more thorough check of the alarm system, including a battery discharge test, cleaning the unit, a duct smoke detector test and an alarm sound test.


Replacement


According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, some smoke detectors and fire alarms are destroyed after being involved in a fire after one use. Employers must quickly and efficiently replace any alarms with new, functional units.
