Foods To Avoid When You Have Gout

Gout is a type of arthritis, caused by a buildup of uric acid that forms crystals in the joints. The crystals cause extreme pain and swelling, along with stiffness. Diet is the best way to control gout.

Significance

Purine is a natural substance found in some foods that converts to uric acid during digestion. It is important to keep purine levels low.

Types

Scallops, game meats, gravy, organ meats, sardines and anchovies have the highest level of purines and should be eaten rarely, if ever.

Considerations

Alcohol, particularly beer and wine, is often a trigger for attacks of gout.

Types

You should eat asparagus, cauliflower, oatmeal, mushrooms, spinach, peas, lentils, beef and wheat germ in moderation, because of their moderate to high levels of purines.

Prevention/Solution

Drink plenty of water to help flush uric acid and eat lower-protein sources, like tofu, eggs and the occasional serving of poultry or white fish.
