Is There Accupunture For A Toothache

Used to treat many ailments, acupuncture can work for tooth pain too.

People seek acupuncture for relief from a variety of ailments. Using certain pressure points in the body, acupuncture aids in pain management and health issues. Toothache pain is among the many ailments that acupuncture can treat.

Significance

Often unexpected and sometimes requiring a costly dental visit, a toothache can be an annoyance on many levels. For those seeking temporary relief, acupuncture can be a very real option; however it will not cure or aid in tooth decay or abscess and it is important to find and treat the source of these major issues.

Additionally, there is no set time table for treatments. As with all acupuncture cases, treatments length is based on patient's needs.

Function

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that emphasizes the science of using small needles in various pressure points throughout the body to aid in pain relief and treatment of illnesses.

The idea behind Chinese medicine and acupuncture is that the body is connected through different pressure points; therefore a toothache is thought to be caused by the stagnation of circulation within the meridians (stomach and intestines) that travel to the oral cavity.

Effects

Alleviating the pain of a toothache relies on figuring out if the pain is caused by what sources called stomach-fire, wind-fire or kidney yin deficiency. Once the cause is discovered, different pressure points are worked on to relieve the pain.

For a toothache, an acupuncturist inserts needles in various areas throughout the feet and hands depending on the location of the tooth pain. It is believed in acupuncture that the feet and hands hold the key to pain relief, so common acupoint areas are: the base of the index finger knuckle joint, between the second and third toe bone and on the palm of the hand between middle and ring finger.

Focusing on these areas is said to temporarily relieve tooth pain.
