Price a Root Canal
Root canals are the necessary evil. The longer you put it off, the more painful it'll get. The price can vary greatly depending on where you live and whether it's a rural area or metropolitan area.

1. Do some research before getting a root canal done. The ballpark cost for a root canal on a front tooth is $360 to $700. For a back tooth, it can run you $600 to $900.
2. Contact your dental insurance company. Find out who much of a root canal they'll cover.
3. Schedule an evaluation with your dentist. Discuss the root canal and his expectations of the amount of dental work needed. Ask him for estimates on the price of the procedure.
4. Know that two different specialists can do your root canal--a dentist or an endodontist. Endodontists are root canal specialists. They will charge up to 50 percent more for a root canal because of their skill and expertise level.
5. Find out who will be doing your root canal. If it's an involved procedure with several roots, your dentist may feel more comfortable referring you to an endodontist. If it's a relatively simple root canal, your dentist may perform it himself.
6. Shop around if there's another reputable dentist who charges less. It's probably not wise to pick names out of the phone book and go to the cheapest dentist. It should be someone you trust. But, there's nothing wrong with going to a friend's dentist, as long as you trust them.
7. Consider getting your root canal done at a dental college. They offer reduced rates and the students are well-supervised.
