Do Daytime Naps Help Fatigue With Fibromyalgia

Approximately 2 percent of the U.S. population suffers from the chronic condition known as fibromyalgia. In some cases, fibromyalgia appears to be set into motion by a specific emotional or physical trauma or an infection. It can also be genetic. Symptoms of fibromyalgia include persistent fatigue accompanied by pain and tenderness in the joints and muscles and sleeplessness. Daytime napping may help sufferers of fibromyalgia more effectively get through the day.


Sleep Deprivation Is Common








The pain, tenderness and all-around discomfort caused by fibromyalgia often result in disrupted sleep patterns. Many sufferers fail to reach a deep, restful sleep because they repeatedly awaken during the night. They are often tired and sluggish during the day.


Avoid Excessive Napping


Generally speaking, people with fibromyalgia are discouraged from napping during the day because naps can make restorative nighttime sleep even harder to achieve. There will be times, however, when sleep deprivation is overwhelming and a nap of a short duration is warranted.


Nap for Brief Periods


Napping during the day may refresh sleep-deprived victims of fibromyalgia. But don't overdo it. If you are feeling exhausted during the day, take a brief 20-minute nap. If you sleep for a longer period of time, it may inhibit your ability to doze off at night.


It will be easier to fall asleep at bedtime if you stick to a regular routine and refrain from consuming caffeine or alcohol too late in the day.


Meditate Day or Night to Relax


If you have trouble relaxing, meditation can be an excellent way to unwind and rest. When you focus solely on your breathing, you are more able to clear your thoughts. It will be much easier to fall asleep with a calm mind.


Talk to Your Doctor


Sleeplessness can add to the debilitating effects of fibromyalgia and is often a major concern to patients. Talk to your doctor about medications such as muscle relaxants and antidepressants, which may encourage a better night's sleep.
