Low sperm count can be a barrier to conception. You can do many things that do not involve medications or surgery to raise it. Low amounts of testosterone, a varicocele (swollen vein in the scrotum that can decrease sperm count) or an infection would probably need to be addressed to increase fertility. See a doctor to rule out specific problems that could be contributing to your low sperm count.
Instructions
1. Avoid heat. Stay away from hot tubs and saunas. Wear loose-fitting cotton underwear or boxer shorts. Keep your laptop off your lap. These measures will keep your scrotum cool, which optimizes sperm production.
2. Maintain a healthy weight to raise sperm count since being overweight can lower it.
3. Avoid caffeine, tobacco, illicit drugs and alcohol, which affect sperm count and motility, according to the Mayo Clinic.
4. Try acupuncture as it might help increase sperm count, according to alternative medicine expert Dr. Andrew Weil. You may need several sessions with a licensed practitioner for maximum benefit.
5. Get adequate amounts of vitamins C and E, folic acid, selenium, zinc and lycopene, which are integral to sperm health. The recommended dosages on supplement bottles are not indicated for treating conditions but preventing deficiency. Ask your doctor what an appropriate dose would be for low sperm count.
6. Do not ejaculate more than a few times a week. This will help increase the number of sperm in your semen when you engage in sexual activity during ovulation.
