Repair A Singer 5825 Sewing Machine

The basic operation of a Singer sewing machine hasn't changed much in the last 150 years.

The Singer Company has been in business since 1851, and their sewing machines are sturdy and built to last. The majority of things that can go wrong with a Singer sewing machine are simple problems, like an obstruction to the thread, or an improperly installed needle or bobbin. Before you pay a sewing machine mechanic to look at your Singer 5825, check for these common problems. Chances are you will not regret it.

Instructions

1. Remove the bobbin and the bobbin thread. Inspect the bobbin case and the bobbin compartment for bits of lint or thread. Remove all thread or lint with tweezers. Replace the bobbin thread, referring to the Singer 5825 Manual for the proper orientation.

2. Remove the needle. Inspect it to make sure it is straight and smooth, having no rough edges or burrs. Replace with a new needle if necessary. Reinsert the needle, making certain it is oriented properly according to the manual.

3. Remove the upper thread. Remove any bits of thread or debris from the thread path and the spool area. Rethread the upper thread properly through the thread guides, take up lever, and needle.

4. Make certain there are no sharp edges or snags in the hole of the needle plate. File the edges of the hole with a metal file, if necessary.

5. Make certain the upper and lower threads are the same thickness. Replace with appropriate thread if necessary.

6. Sew a seam on a test piece of fabric. Experiment with the tension, increasing or decreasing tension to obtain a smoother stitch.

7. Wiggle the electrical cable and the foot switch cable. Replace any cables that operate intermittently when wiggled.
