Dealing with congestion is no fun, but neither is going to the doctor for expensive drugs to ease your breathing problems. Learning to use a few herbal items that you probably have in your spice rack will save you both discomfort and money. Even if you don't stock them for regular cooking, herbs are an essential part of natural remedies that you should keep on hand, once you learn their medicinal uses.
Instructions
1. Brew up a nice cup of hot tea. While the tea is steeping, stir in a tiny amount of sage or thyme. Try using just a pinch at first as some people don't care for the taste. Peppermint will also relieve breathing. Peppermint tea is as simple to make as crushing a small peppermint candy up and letting it dissolve in the cup of hot tea.
2. Add ice to the tea, if you prefer iced tea. If it's seasonally available, stand a candy cane in the tea to stir it with. It won't melt and blend with the tea as quickly as it does with the hot tea, but if it's a hot day out it just may refresh you and make you feel better.
3. Use an aromatherapy, or herbal steam vapor to breath in the herbs if you're not a tea drinker. Boil a small pot of water, about a quart or so, until it is steaming. Add in 2 tablespoons of sage or thyme or 2 to 3 pieces of crushed peppermint. Stir the mixture. Carefully lean over the pot and breath in the fumes.
4. Buy a variety of essential oils to aid in your battle with congestion. Good quality oils can be purchased at nutritional stores and will last a long time, as you only need a drop or two. Eucalyptus oil or lavender oil will help with congestion, by merely placing 2 drops of either on a cloth handkerchief and breathing in the fumes.
5. Purchase a book on the use of herbs and essential oils while you are in the nutritional store getting the eucalyptus and lavender oils. Herbs and oils are becoming more and more of a standard staple in family medicine cabinets. Not only will the herbs and oils discussed here ease your congestion, they are great remedies for a lot of other ailments.
