Autoimmune thyroiditis is a condition that causes the thyroid gland to become enlarged, due to an attack of antibodies. This condition is also known as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and there is no explanation as to why it occurs. With that being the case, there are still various symptoms that can be seen when it does present itself.
Enlargement
Goiters can develop as a result of autoimmune thyroiditis. These are usually the cause of iodine deficiency, but they are also a symptom. Goiters appear on the front of the neck and they are the result of an extremely swollen thyroid.
Disorders
Different endocrine conditions that are present, such as adrenal gland deficiencies or diabetes, can be symptoms.
Lethargy
The body can become lethargic and fatigued if autoimmune thyroiditis is present.
Weight Gain
The thyroid is responsible for regulating metabolism and can become compromised, which can lead to weight gain.
Weakness
The muscles and the rest of the body can become weak even when doing the smallest of tasks.
