Causes Of Back & Leg Pain

There are a number of factors that can contribute to leg and back pain. The pain can be caused by pressure on the spinal nerves or damage to the muscles, spine or organs. A physician must take a thorough medical history to begin to diagnose the multiple pain issues. Provide your doctor with details of when the pain began and when it is most acute to assist in the diagnosis.

Sciatica

Many leg and back pain problems are the result of pressure on the sciatic nerve, which presents as a burning and shooting pain from the lower back down the leg.

Degenerative Disease

The American Academy of Family Physicians reports that nearly 90 percent of elderly adults have some form of lumbar spine stenosis, which can cause severe lower back and leg pain.

Strain

Heavy lifting and strenuous exercising can cause back and leg pain which is usually relieved with rest, ice, compressions and elevation (RICE).

Slipped Disc

When a vertebra in the spine slips, it causes pressure on the disc below it and can create pain when moving. A stress fracture from a fall can cause a slipped disc.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage between the vertebrae begins to wear. This pain is more prominent in the morning and at night.

Sleep

Sleeping on a lumpy mattress can cause undue pressure on the back and legs, leading to pain.
