Dangerous House Spiders

Although most spiders pose little or no threat to humans or pets, a few dangerous ones sometimes make their way into homes. They seek refuge in dark corners, inside clothing, or behind curtains or pictures and will bite if their hiding place is disturbed.


Recluse Spiders


Recluse spiders have a violin-shaped mark on their heads and six eyes rather than the usual eight. Its bite can cause severe skin irritation or lesions as well as headache, muscle pain, nausea and fatigue.


Black Widow


A black widow spider has a shiny black body and a red or black hourglass-shaped mark on its abdomen. The female delivers a venomous bite that can cause redness or swelling. More serious effects include pain, spasms, difficulty breathing and nausea.


Yellow Sac Spider


This small, light yellow spider has a dark stripe on its abdomen. It spins sac-like webs in the corners of ceilings and walls. According to the University of California, this spider may be responsible for the most bites on humans. The bites cause redness and swelling.


Aggressive House Spider


Also known as the male hobo spider, this spider spins a funnel web. Its bite leads to similar effects as those of the brown recluse. This spider is common around houses from August through November.


Black House Spider








These spiders have a dark brown to black body with a velvety texture. Their bites cause sweating, muscle pain, vomiting and dizziness.


Wolf Spiders








Wolf spiders are not aggressive but will deliver a painful bite if humans disturb them. The bite can cause redness and swelling. Wolf spiders are are found most often in homes in the fall.
