Comfort A Sore Itchy Eye

Sore and itchy eyes can be so irritating they can keep you from working, socializing or getting the sleep you need. They could also signal an infection, allergy or injury, so the condition should be treated immediately.

Instructions

1. Determine if you have allergies. Keep track of what makes your eyes sore and itchy. Avoid irritants. If the condition becomes chronic, see an allergist.

2. Use cool water to rinse out your eyes. Another option is to put a cold compress over both eyes. Use a wet washcloth for the compress.

3. Put in eye drops. Over the counter eye drops such as artificial tears may help reduce itching and soreness. Tilt your head back and pull your lower eyelid down. Put a drop or two in each eye. Follow the directions regarding frequency.

4. Close your eyes and place a slice of cucumber over each one for 10 minutes. The cool cucumber soothe your eyes. Closing and resting your eyes also helps reduce soreness.

5. Take a break from the TV or computer. Looking at a computer screen all day can cause sore eyes. Taking periodic breaks may help.

6. Take out your contacts. Wearing contact lenses throughout the day can dry your eyes, making them dry and itchy. Give your eyes a regular breather.

7. Check for infections. Some infections, such as conjunctivitis, may need to be treated with antibiotic eye drops. If you have discharge from your eyes or trouble with your vision see your doctor.
