Irritable Bowel Symptoms

People who suffer from a chronic irritated bowel are often diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, a condition characterized by abdominal discomfort and distress. About 20 percent of adult Americans are thought to have irritable bowel syndrome, and it is one of the most commonly diagnosed medical disorders. An exact cause is not known, but it is more common in women than men and about half of sufferers start to experience symptoms before they turn 35. Treatment options include medication and a warning to avoid foods that are known to cause flareups.

Abdominal Pain

One of the most common symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome is chronic abdominal pain or cramping.

Bloating

Many people with irritable bowel syndrome feel bloated or have stomach discomfort when the condition flares up.

Passing Stools

Diarrhea and constipation are symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Diarrhea is more common, but some people have both symptoms at different times.

Gas

Feeling gassy or passing gas frequently are symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Mucous

People with irritable bowel syndrome may notice mucous when they are passing stools. Sometimes bouts of diarrhea are caused by excess mucous in the stool.
