Know When You Need A Pelvic Exam

There can be some confusion when deciding whether or not it is necessary to have a pelvic exam. A woman should always take her health seriously and following some simple guidelines should help you know when it is time to pick up the phone and make an appointment with a gynecologist.

Instructions

1. Make an appointment with a gynecologist if you are over the age of 21 and have never had a pelvic exam. At this age, even if you are not sexually active, it is important to have yearly exams. Finding a doctor you are comfortable with is best. Don't be afraid to find another doctor if you are uncomfortable with you current gynecologist.

2. Set up an appointment with a gynocologist, regardless of your age, if you are sexually active. Even condoms do not protect against all sexually transmitted diseases, so do not assume that you are always protected if you are using them. It is important to be checked regularly if you are sexually active. Catching these diseases early greatly reduces the risk of complications that they can cause.

3. See your gynecologist if you are experiencing any unusual symptoms in the vaginal area. These symptoms may include, but are not limited to, bleeding after intercourse, bleeding between menstrual cycles, vaginal burning or itching and unusual discharge. There are many conditions that can cause these symptoms and your gynecologist can rule out any potential problems and address any that are present. Getting treatment for symptoms can bring you great relief.

4. Make an appointment with your gynecologist if you suspect that you have been with a sexual partner that has a sexually transmitted disease, for whatever reason. Many STD's do not produce noticeable symptoms, so even if you are experiencing no symptoms, you should see your gynecologist. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
