Prostate cancer occurs when cells from the prostate gland (which is part of the male reproductive system) mutate and begin to grow uncontrollably. Prostate cancer can cause difficulty in urinating and reduction in the urine stream. Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men, though its incidence varies throughout the world.
Age
As a man gets older, his chances of getting prostate cancer increase. While prostate cancer is fairly rare in men under the age of 45, each year afterward a man's chance of getting prostate cancer rises.
Genetics
As with many forms of cancer, there is a genetic component to prostate cancer. This has been determined by looking at rates of prostate cancer among identical twins, different racial groups and by screening men for certain genes.
Diet
High levels of certain fatty acids, especially those found in hydrogenated vegetable oils, have been shown to increase the risk of prostate cancer. Higher intake of vitamin E (through foods, not supplements) and omega-3 oils have been shown to decrease the risk of prostate cancer.
Medications
Anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin, may lower the risk of prostate cancer. Elevated levels of testosterone may increase the risk of prostate cancer.
Ejaculation Frequency
Some studies have shown that men who ejaculate more often, whether due to masturbation or sexual intercourse, are less likely to develop prostate cancer.
