Dyspraxia Symptoms In Teenagers

Dyspraxia is a disorder that affects development, including movement and thought co-ordination. A teenager with dyspraxia can live with some or all of the symptoms, including difficulties with intellectual development, emotional development, physical abilities, speech and pronunciation, language skills and social development skills.

Intellectual

Teenagers living with dyspraxia find it difficult to learn. Some teenagers with dyspraxia find learning more difficult than others, as there is no set minimum or maximum learning ability level with this condition. Another symptom of dyspraxia is lack of concentration. This causes delays in learning milestones and educational development.

Emotional

Emotional factors can play hard on a dyspraxic teenager, as they can suffer with frustration due to the stress of the effects of living and coming to terms with dyspraxia. Dyspraxia does not limit how a teenager feels about other people and situations. Individuals with dyspraxia are considered deeply caring and best suited to caring-type careers, such as working with the disabled and elderly.

Physical

Physical symptoms of dyspraxia include problems with balance and coordination, as well as clumsiness. It is not uncommon for a teenager with dyspraxia to regularly bump into and drop things. The physical symptoms also include difficulty with walking, running and being able to perform general exercises. Teenagers with dyspraxia are also known to keep poorer hygiene due to not liking the sensation of physical touch, resulting in not regularly washing the face or brushing teeth.

Speech

Speech is a common problem for patients with dyspraxia, resulting in stuttering, pausing and slower pronunciation. Speech therapy is a solution treatment for this particular symptom and can improve speech over a period of time.

Language

Language can be a slow process, as many teenagers living with dyspraxia find it difficult to read, learn and can also have difficultly with speech. However, it is not an impossible task; with specialized dyspraxia-based tutoring, language difficulties can be improved.

Social

Social skills can be a cause for concern for teenagers with dyspraxia due to lack of concentration, excitable behavior, phobias, obsessive behavior and the speed in which they become distracted from a situation. Making new friends can be difficult because others may not understand the symptoms and the reasoning behind this condition.
